Each year, our idealo survival insurance supports a climate protection project that offsets 50% of our employees' emissions. For 2023, we've partnered with CarboCert to promote regenerative agriculture, leading to an offset of over 6,000 tons of CO2e. 🌱 To gain a deeper understanding of the project, our co-founder and member of the advisory board Albrecht von Sonntag and some members of our idealo team, alongside SouthPole, a carbon finance consultancy, visited one of the farms involved in this project who implemented regenerative agriculture methods. During our visit, we learned about sustainable farming practices and the vital role of humus in climate change mitigation. Soil can act as a carbon sink through the formation of humus. This fertile top layer of soil contains carbon that has previously been CO2, thus contributing to carbon sequestration. 🌟 Globally, soils are in poor condition, resulting in humus loss, reduced fertility and CO2 release. “You must be curious and willing to dive into a topic to comprehend it so you can work on it effectively.” Meet Peter Jentsch, Head of Architecture and Software Engineering. “I joined 11 years ago. idealo gave me a chance to be part of creating a new product, which should establish a growth opportunity for an already successful platform. This was the idealo Direktkauf (“direct purchase”, making it possible to purchase products directly through idealo). While developing it, we had a lot of independence and liberties, and I was involved in programming and then launching the product at the end, celebrating its success. Eventually, this product was discontinued, and I and many others got involved with the big “AWS migration” project. While this happened, I had plenty of time and opportunity to decide where to go next – a great opportunity. Eventually, I decided to switch to the position I am currently in. One thing I really enjoy is the opportunity to stick with a project and be along for its journey from start to finish, from the first conceptual phase to the eventual feedback once it is released, whether it’s positive or negative. Over the course of the last couple of years, things have changed, and so has your own perspective – which is very interesting. idealo is constantly working on a lot of things, and a big part of this is developing software. “At the end of the day, everyone is happy: our customers, merchants, and idealo.” Meet Andrea Springer-Ferazin, Head of Marketing Tech. “I joined idealo six years ago, focusing on customer acquisition and retention. We manage the technical marketing channels of idealo – the channels through which we reach potential new or existing customers to make them aware of us and keep using our services. We reach out to them to show them what an excellent service we offer and make them aware that by using our price comparison, they can save quite a lot of money when shopping online. Also, we get existing customers to return to idealo when a product they have looked at is available at an even lower price. What I am especially proud of: Establishing Marketing Tech as a collaborative, cross-functional concept was a huge – and successful – mindset shift. Until just four years ago, there was a Marketing and a Tech team, and they communicated via isolated ticket requests. My heartfelt ambition was to get both sides to sit down and work together. After all, there is no modern marketing without the technology required and vice versa. So why not merge both sides with a clearly defined common goal? “I’m driven by my fascination with the huge amounts of data we handle at idealo.” 🚀 Meet Martin Gerlach, Senior Software Developer. “Since joining the company in 2013, I’ve been heavily involved in working with what was then known as “big data,” focusing on data import. I appreciate the opportunity to contribute to the technical aspects and influence decision-making processes. What my team and I have been doing over the last few years is quite significant. We enabled inventory analytics by collecting data for ongoing changes to listings and preparing it for historical analyses. By relating this data to other parameters, such as user data or seasons, we enable our analysts to understand price developments, seasonal trends, and when certain products sell best, and ultimately to work with our partner merchants to optimise the inventory that they list at idealo. I also ensure that any changes, such as price changes or product descriptions, are automatically entered into our systems. This is important so that our customers always have the most up-to-date information. There are many reasons why my work at idealo is so exciting. The human and collegial working atmosphere here is great. Also, work-life balance! I started working part-time when my daughter was a year old, and we had our son a few years later. New/old addition to the management team. 🙌 We’re welcoming back Martin Sinner, co-founder of idealo, as our new co-CEO, joining the idealo management team consisting of co-CEOs Maxim Nohroudi and Jörn Rehse. Co-founder Albrecht von Sonntag will join the Advisory Board of idealo and focus on the creation of fair and transparent market regulations in European e-commerce and the enforcement of idealo's interests within the framework of the Digital Markets Act. As part of idealo’s founding team, Martin already was co-CEO until 2012. He then went to Silicon Valley for Axel Springer to develop new business areas. Most recently, Martin worked for several years at 360dialog, a company specializing in WhatsApp marketing, as well as for Media-Saturn (including Redcoon).
