Pros

-friendly people -nice building -close to embarcadero bart

Cons

-confusing culture -lots of talk and quoting books on how to treat people. meanwhile, the studio is often a tense environment, the ceos 'talk at people' instead of communicate with them, and generally, i dont think ive ever seen anyone genuinely excited about anything at this company. theres speech after speech about 'reaching for success' and 'asking for forgiveness, not permission' but if there ever was a place where fear of being noticed outweighs the desire to contribute and feel integral to the company, this would be it. -no love for games -theres no game designer, just a bunch of folders with documents that are updated by mystery lead 1,2,3, or 4 in a bunch of different places. there have been multiple occasions where the higher ups are openly stating that its 'not important'. meanwhile, everyone else is severely confused about the specifics of a lot of things. theres just no one to go to about this. unless you're psychic, and magically know what the higher ups want, you're just going to get it wrong, causing even more technical overhead. theres no method, theres no love. the reason i wanted to work in games is because i love games. these guys are trying to 'revolutionize the world' and 'be provocative' and '; its just a big pretentious load of nothing. they dont even care about their games. play BC for more than a day and try to tell me im wrong. -no love for employees -i cant tell you how awkward it is to stand in an elevator with your boss, saying hello, being polite, only to be ignored. this is the most passive-aggressive boss ive ever had. have you seen the movie nightcrawler? well the main character is a good idea of what you should expect. this guy will only shake your hand and smile to send a message to anyone watching. its not to actually say hello to you. its weird, but it matters when this the guy you spend 75% of your life around. hes always stomping around, ready to shoot first and ask questions later. my department was always at the mercy of this psycho. we had no line of defense, so if he was blaming us, chances were that we would have to eat it and move on (if you werent already getting laid off). im not here to jab at this guy, im giving the next fellow a heads up out of common human decency. you want to work here? bring your loudest headphones and tunnel vision goggles. -no room to move up -a lot people will tell you that this happens, but its like the loch ness monster. some people claim to have seen it, but its pretty obvious that it doesnt exist. you know the story; you get a few introductory tasks, and all the sudden you're months down the line, basically doing all the job requirements but you never actually receive a promotion. you'll burn out by your own volition, or theirs. ive had one of the higher ups dump entire projects on my desk that were outside of my department. every 30 minutes, id get a ping on IM asking if i was done yet. to them, this is an 'opportunity'. its cheap labor. read the other reviews, they're quite clear on this subject.

Great game, some good people, horrible atmosphere

Pros

The game itself is terrific, and there are some really awesome people working here.

Cons

Crunch time all the time, 60+ hour weeks are the norm. Mandatory 8-6 office hours, WFH discouraged. Atmosphere of fear and intimidation, everyone is afraid of the cofounders. Major micromanagement, everyone must send out EOD emails detailing their work for the day. Benefits are not competitive, PTO and holidays are almost non-existent. Preferential treatment for fraternity buddies of the cofounders doesn't exactly feel fair. Some people are allowed to go to the gym for hours each day and keep giant piles of dirty laundry in the office, but those who work throughout the day still can't take off before 6 or come in after 8. Did I mention the mandatory 8-6 office hours enough? Where else in the area are engineers expected to be at their desks by 8am sharp?

Pros

The comradeship was good and you will get into great shape working at the Gym. There is no HR here and a very "loose" environment.

Cons

- Awfully Bad Management - Insecure Co-Founder - If it isn't perfect it won't work - Bring your own laptop and chair - Awful Hours - 8am - 10pm...yes...seriously. - Paranoia - Taking Time off is very hard to do due to Crunch - Crunch Time - Indecisive Co-Founder - People get burnt out quickly.

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback. We take these matters very seriously and appreciate your honesty. I’d like to apologize for the negative experiences you had during your time here at PennyPop. I’d like to directly address some of your past experiences and show how we have evolved and matured as a company. We no longer have stock-standard hours. Instead, we have a flexhours system where we trust in everyone to be responsible and accountable for themselves and their teams. Our system and culture of mutual trust also extends to our working from home policy and any time off. We also recognize that our processes are not perfect, which is why we work tirelessly to improve them. Along those lines, we have integrated more precision planning, more transparent decision making, and more efficient processes into everything we do so that we build better productions and mitigate a lot of the hurdles you mention. Our work is never done and we'll never stop improving. Thanks again and best of luck!
