I've worked as an RVN for 15 years. I was employed by vets now for 18 months and I can honestly say it was the worst 18 months of my career. The wages they pay are terrible considering you're working nights. I'm now paid considerably more working normal Monday to Friday days than I was paid by vets now doing nights and weekends. I did no CPD through vets now the whole time I was there and arranged and paid for all my own. They say the first year is directed CPD but they didn't do any with me. I received no EEC training from then despite them claiming all there staff are trained in ECC, that is just a blatant lie. While I was there they were so desperate for locum vets they'd take anyone, some of the vets I worked with were terrible. I wouldn't take my animals to vets now having seen the standard of care given by some of the vets I had to work with.
The management are out of touch with the staff in the clinics. I felt that the company was far too financially motivated, I understand that it's a business and ultimately it's there to make money but I've seen whelping dogs euthanased because the owners couldn't afford a c.section. Vets are given average transactions value targets which encourage them the make a minimum amount of money per consultation.
They claim on their adverts they offer a good work life balance but I disagree, I was constantly being hassled to work more shifts due to the lack of permanent staff. The fact that the company can't staff their clinics across the country speaks volumes.
