Pros

As it says in their mission statement, Urban Sprouts is a joyful, diverse, learning community where the rights of children take precedence, their ideas have voice, and each child and family is valued. Every member of the team is called to truly care for the children and each other. They esteem people over programs and I love being a part of work that impacts my community in a meaningful way. While providing high quality early care and education has remained at the core, the mission extends beyond the boundaries of their University City location. Urban Sprouts is an advocate for young children and a partner with others seeking to elevate the needs of our community throughout St. Louis, nationally, and throughout the world. This commitment, passion, and dedication to make and sustain positive change is what brought me to Urban Sprouts and empowers me to serve.

Cons

As with any growing organization, we are constantly looking for like-minded people to partner with us in this work. Finding qualified individuals who understand our mission and are excited to devote themselves to learning, growing and serving our community remains a challenge. We expect everyone in our program, regardless of position, to uphold one another and work together to make the vision a reality. We believe in creating joyful spaces and are committed to finding, developing and retaining the best people to do join us in this endeavor.

Pros

Urban Sprouts is an exceptionally loving and innovative childcare center that truly lives up to it's values of providing children with agency, instilling curiosity and a love of learning. The Reggio Emilia-inspired pedagogy is one of my preferences for exceptional educational and social-emotional benefits for children and teachers. Being innovative, inspired, and curious about the children you care for and how they learn is essential to this learning philosophy. Management believes in and stays true to their word in carrying out the values and practices they advertise: providing equitable and inclusive education to all students, building community and providing access to any resources needed for families, and growing and caring for their employees. You can feel the love, thought and care that is placed into each decision. As a teacher, I was given exceptional training through weekly reflective meetings to discuss curriculum with my colleagues and higher-ups, as well as professional development opportunities on trauma-informed care, CPR certification, and communication development. When I experienced some personal hardships with my health, I was supported in taking the rest I needed and was never made to feel guilty. If you are part of Urban Sprouts and love learning while showing care for your students, you will love it here.

Cons

No place is perfect, and being in early childcare can be challenging. To no fault of this company, the nature of early childcare can mean high turnover and, at times, a variety of levels of experience, meaning there can be a lot of training of new staff and adjusting to new teaching styles. However, this is true at any childcare center. I see this as an opportunity to grow in my professional experience, as I learned how to collaborate with folks with different personalities and strengths from mine.

Pros

Working at Urban Sprouts has been an incredibly rewarding experience. The leadership team is supportive, the mission is deeply rooted in equity and community care, and the work culture is both collaborative and inspiring. I’ve grown professionally and personally while being part of a team that truly values children, families, and staff. I’m proud to be part of an organization that leads with heart and purpose.

Cons

Because Urban Sprouts is a mission-driven nonprofit, things can move quickly and change often to meet community needs. This can be challenging for those who prefer a highly structured or predictable work environment.
