Pros

Free candy. And soda. That's it.

Cons

Where do I start? First of all, it's known around Chicago that the CEO David Stephenson paid interns / employees to up the Glassdoor rating and write fake reviews. That's the only reason why they have 3 stars. The environment is toxic masculinity at it's finest. As a young creative, you learn very little and see almost none of your work come to life. It's 3 men who have had very little agency experience come together on a power trip. Not to mention the work they produce is junk, I mean have you seen the Navy Pier billboards?

Two by Four: An Honest Take

Pros

Only a handful of companies can be absolutely "awful"; anyone who indicates only negatives is probably only focusing on them. There are positives to this place. Let's take a look: - Creative: The creative work done here is excellent. Quite simply, there are creative people here. The owner is a creative and he started this company from a few people (3, I think). In 20 years, it's grown to 25+ on excellent creative work. - Tenacity: This is tenacious agency; "small, but mighty" as the saying goes. To go along with strong creative, the organization effort is tenacious and that drives success. - Fun: Again, the owner tries to make this place fun & quirky. And it generally is. The owner is, after all, a quirky person. - Culture: There is culture here. Don't expect anything hollow! Personality lives here.

Cons

Now for the negatives. Unfortunately, in my opinion, they outweigh the positives. The 3+ rating here is misleading; look at the reviews. Many of the "stellar" ones are from interns. This is based on my own personal experiences, so take that for what it is. Leadership: You cannot be everything. The owner is intelligent, very creative, and quirky/fun. Where the shortcoming is in leadership of people. Good leaders inspire; they "see" people and now how to bring out the best in them. Strong people leadership here is lacking. Reactive: Leadership here is "reactive" in nature. I am someone who sees "calm" as strength; management here tends to get very angry with things get chaotic. Which brings me to my next point... Chaotic: If you are someone who is okay with an environment with little to no structure, this is not a negative. But as someone who personally looks to organization and structure as guidance, this place is a mess. It's basically a "get it done whatever it takes" approach -- suffice to say, this leads to long hours and a lot of frustration. Focus: Two by Four does not seem to have a strong sense of purpose. Whatever work is available to be chased, is chased. For example, several of the clients are large "enterprise" companies that can easily push the smaller Two by Four around. This puts people in difficult places. Why? Money. Can't blame 'em, I guess. Visibility: This goes along with leadership; transparency or a "visibility" to a sense of purpose and how to succeed is not a strong point here.

Pros

The CEO isn't in the office very often.

Cons

You'll receive little to no feedback on creative work. If you're new to the team you'll be isolated, regularly left out of briefings / meetings / presentations, etc. The hours are ridiculous because the creative team tends to only start caring about a pitch 1 - 2 days before it is due. If you work here you'll most likely be in the dark about clients, what work of yours was presented, and what your status is as an employee. If you want to have a life outside of working at this company, good luck. None of your creative directors care about you or your growth as a creative. You're a seat filler until you realize this is an awful place to work and leave. Also, they lose clients like crazy so don't expect any consistency with what you're working on. You'll have no relationship with the client anyway because you don't really matter.
