Pros

On the surface, the programs are designed to provide genuine help to folks in need in the areas of employment assistance, housing needs, and Veteran assistance. On paper, it appears as though it will be a rewarding position with "room for advancement".

Cons

In reality, this organization only cares about its numbers so it can obtain more government funding; so much in fact, that I was regularly asked to "fudge some numbers" so that they look appealing to the CEO as well as legislators. In other words, the numbers reported are not even close to the actual success rate (or lack thereof). Additionally in this regard, it is illegal...per the contract with the State of CT to operate in this manner. The Workplace should count its blessings that they haven't been officially audited yet (although files are also altered and/or conveniently removed, so it probably wouldn't matter). There is also a severe disconnect between management and staff, with a clique type of mentality. If you are not 'in' the clique, then you are ousted by belligerent management. While I personally did not experience this unfortunate circumstance, I have seen first-hand a great number of hard working and passionate employees I respected get sworn and screamed at by a member of management who is more interested in covering his/her own tracks (i.e.- demanding employees to engage in illegal file and document practices, with the threat of termination if he/she refuses). Aside from the constant reminders that you could be fired and replaced on a daily basis, I have never seen a more extensive level of micro-management in any position I have ever had. Particularly with their flagship program, Platform to Employment.

Pros

On paper, the mission of getting unemployed back to work is wonderful and there is some well-intentioned staff here.

Cons

It begins at the top with a CEO who is driven by ego and pads his own position with government funding. Make no mistake, this organization is a make-work program that needs to post numbers for grant funding to justify its own existence. Whether the unemployed find solid, substantive jobs they can live on is a secondary consideration, and their signature program, Platform to Employment, is a prime example. Many highly qualified, highly educated long-term unemployed enrolled in "classes" to teach them how to find work. The majority of those in the program aren't out of work because they aren't qualified or don't know how to find work, they're facing age discrimination which this program can't solve. Some participants find work but rarely at a comparable salary and while those who teach the class are fond of jargon like "onboarding" and "cohort" their methods are dated. I saw people fall asleep in class, roll their eyes or simply drop out. People don't take the program because they want a certificate, they suffer through it because they want a good job.

Some pluses and minuses

Pros

The committment to diversity is real. The pay is fair and the time off is on par with the market.

Cons

The company has grown bigger than the managment team can handle. Emergencies pop up and the focus goes there or they are busy chasing after a new program/funding stream. For an organization focused on workforce development, their care about staff is lacking. If you have integrity, want to do the right thing by policy and staff, you will be punished.
