Pros

- Structured curriculum that is written in-house - Well-stocked pantry - $100 stationery voucher annually - Classrooms are equipped with the necessary technology (projector, audio system) for lessons and materials like whiteboard markers - Relatively manageable class headcount - Interactions with my students, building rapport with them, helping them to achieve their personal best and seeing them grow throughout the terms/years - Relatively flexible weekday morning hours - Supportive academic team - Friendly colleagues

Cons

- Marking takes up a lot of time outside of lesson preparation and teaching hours - Working weekends and two late weekdays that end at 9.30pm… must be prepared to sacrifice family time and social life/manage your own expectations as the private education industry requires one to work weekends and after typical school hours - Challenging to take leave; first come first served basis and must book way in advance (9+ months ahead)

Pros

- Teaching materials are prepared by in house curriculum team which reduces planning workload for teachers - Working hours to pay ratio is high (but subject to which work scheme employees are on)

Cons

- No career growth after a while - Leave system is atrocious. Leave for the following year is balloted on a single day on the current year ( eg. 2026 leave is applied during 2025). - Hourly / Flexi Monthly teachers scheme is calculated down to the minute, making leave and pay calculations a nightmare to track. - Facing a manpower crunch since covid struck which leads to increasing workload - Quality of curriculum has been on steady decline and not as "premium" as it used to be, coupled with the questionable decision to increase in school fees for students gives parents the unrealistic expectations of results that they expect from teachers. -Differential treatment towards teachers on different schemes/ seniority. Recently there has also been a few teachers who "spoil the market" in creating teaching slides, leading to those who use the standard materials being marked down. - Training team has become extremely micromanaging in recent times. Example being Appraisal rubrics being modified by the training team that marks down teachers who do not follow their mandated teaching styles. So-called "best practices" that used to be suggestions are now compulsory to obtain a "meet expectation" grade, instead of giving credit for results and efficiency.

Pros

- lack of micromanagement thanks to the heavy workload for teachers flexible morning working hours since classes start from 3pm on regular days (non-school holidays) - higher-than-average starting pay for fresh grads because you will burn both weekends (as compared to gov orgs) - stocked pantry at the company's expense (varies in different locations) - time-management for lesson plans, worksheets, & curriculum planned by other teams - lesson observations for new hires - $100 stationery voucher, dental claim & doctor anywhere is free under GE corporate, transport claim between centres if you've cover lessons (although it takes a while for finance to reimburse you) - teacher's day treats by fellow colleagues! - new teaching schemes introduced recently in their attempt to retain talents for beyond 2 years - encourages teachers to take on professional development courses

Cons

- last minute covers can be assigned to you but you can't tell the planning team that you can't classes at the last minute (you need to tell them waaaaay in advance) - lesson planning and marking time isn't taken into account in your schedule so of course it will eat into your weekends - need to work 9-6 on both weekends (& be prepared to come in early to prepare for 9am classes although it won't be reimbursed) - may need to deal with unsupportive/unreasonable clients (students & parents) - self-entitled acad team/upper management who may use their power to get their way with issues you raise and offer insincere words of advice (bonus: you may get a dismissive subject head (SH) who thinks your worries as a new hire are invalid) - long notice period (2months - probation, 3 months - after confirmation) - entirely opaque about their bonuses (besides their 13th-month bonus) - applying for annual leaves 1 year in advance is the norm (having any last minute one approved would definitely depend on whether you scratch the planning team's back, they responded to mine rather quickly after i immediately ok-ed their last minute cover class in a faraway location)

Pros

Quality curriculum materials across all levels.

Cons

Long working hours. Last minute covers and having to travel from one outlet to another for covers. Excessive marking load as Teachers are required to mark for classes they covered too. Leaves are too difficult to take. Always receiving rejected leave approval. Teachers are therefore burnt out. MC rate is high.
