Pros

Working with the evening, day undergraduate and graduate students as well as the cadets. This school now has a large population of civilian students so it is no longer just a "military" school. The student population is diverse and rapidly expanding to offer more opportunities to the low country. The online degree offerings from the Citadel continue to grow and many other students across the United States are now joining the citadel team. The growth and expansion of the diverse student body at the citadel is a great thing for the state.

Cons

The pay at the highest echelons is very out of balance compared to the rest of the employees. When full professors make $60K-$70K a year and the president and several others make obscene amounts, there is a problem. Just recently the top 7 or 8 employees at the school took huge pay increases and tried to cover it up when they were questioned about it. From my standpoint, the leadership at the Citadel lacks ethics.

Thank you for your feedback. We are continuing to address the salaries of our faculty as a part of our efforts with the salary study. All of our salaries above $50k are on the state's public database. All increases are documented in HR, following our pay plan policy, and we are audited by the state HR office as required.

Pros

The Citadel is unlike any other higher education institution in South Carolina. The combination of a military environment with higher education creates a unique, challenging, and inspiring workplace atmosphere. It's a small campus, so you truly get to know your colleagues in every department and recognize almost everyone when you walk across campus. All employees are dedicated to the development of principled leaders and strive to provide quality services and education to the students.

Cons

The Citadel continues to balance its past with its present, while striving to improve future planning. The leadership has made great strides with inclusion and diversity efforts and must continue to do so in order to attract and retain a more diverse student, faculty, and staff population.

Pros

vacation and health insurance are pretty nice as is the summer work schedule. the students/cadets, most of them, are respectful and you can see how your work makes a difference. physical office environment is nice and bosses let you work from home with out too much red tape. you are provided the technology to do your job. good professional development opportunities.

Cons

senior leaders are insulated, condescending and enjoy giving each other raises and bonuses while not providing for others. some areas are well run but other areas seem to be in disarray lately which doesn't instill confidence. president is nice but other vps are can be unapproachable. very old way of thinking - very white male perspective dominated. doesn't seem to have a handle on diversity.
