Demoralizing experience

Pros

There are some excellent professionals here that really work hard and put in long hours because they care about the quality of their work. In particular members of the Design and Editorial teams that own their work and are truly dedicated to it. They were a pleasure to interact and learn from.

Cons

Where to start- if you're looking for professional development you won't find it here. Be prepared to have your every step questioned and your self-confidence take a huge hit. Some members of the AM/PM and senior leadership team are running their own fiefdom and if you're not a part of it then you're basically screwed. Your background & experience is trivialized, you won't be given any room to expand your skill set or knowledge, and you'll spend a lot time questioning how things ever get done. Having 1 main client (or rather ONLY 1 client) on the Healthcare side of the business will leave your scratching your head on how the bills get paid. Skilled Directors and Business Development professionals will join the team and bolt within months when it becomes apparent that any change they want to make will be rejected thanks to the "status quo" culture that is fostered by senior leadership.

Don't leave a decent job for this company

Pros

The offer was generous, as were vacation days and health insurance benefits. (However bonus structure is entirely undefined and at the sole discretion of the CEO and evaluation criteria are not shared.)

Cons

My review is of the healthcare business, I have no insight into the publication business. The company has one client which is a result of the CEO's relationship with a former colleague. They do no business development work so no new clients are on the horizon. They also have no internal structure so projects sit untouched or people spin their wheels with no progress. Additionally troubling for me was the open concept of the office. There is not a door in the entire building, cubicles are reserved for VPs, and the rest of the employees sit at long cafeteria-style tables with no personal space and noise everywhere due to poor building sound proofing. Nothing is shared about company finances and there is much speculation as to how the lights are kept on.

Terrible Leadership

Pros

They hire some very talented people. The small size of the company is nice at first, and under better leadership could be a really nice feature.

Cons

This agency has a lot of problems, including a lack of business development, stagnation, navel-gazing management, lack of consistent vision, and dismal retention of employees. But at the root cause of all is the fact that senior leadership is negligent, lazy, and narcissistic. They don't really have the training or desire to lead and grow a company, and it shows up in not-so-subtle ways. There is no trust in their own decisions, so they tend to mull the same simple initiatives for months or years with inaction. There is no trust in employees, and instead of driving new business, leadership involves themselves in the minutiae of day-to-day routes, checking employees’ work, and the implication is that no matter how hard you try you are always falling short and they could do it better—and would if they could. The company prefers to hire out and hire above as opposed to taking the time to mentor, support, and grow their existing staff. There is no career development, no training for managers, sporadic or no performance evaluations at all, no support, chronic understaffing, and a toxic, nasty undercurrent to the culture that makes everyone just a little too insecure and defensive all the time. It takes a while to show itself, but once it does... good people leave. You will never hear thank you at this place. They will love-bomb you when you join, then leave you to twist in the wind and the more they run you into the ground, withhold support, and neglect your professional development and growth, the more you will lose confidence in your own value as you start to wonder whether maybe you are just terrible at your job. Trust that it's them and not you.
