Pros

Great team culture Fantastic training for foundational MH career

Cons

Giant disconnect between leadership and frontline direct care. Leadership is unwilling to listen and adapt to changing field landscape and as a result tends to be reactive to problems instead of proactive. Pay rate and compensation is on the lowest side in the industry and pay raises are miserly at an average of 30 cents per year based on performance that is judged heavily on checklists that are subject to conditions that are often out of one's control. Example, completing lengthy documents with clients that have SPMI symptoms that inhibit timely completion. Or sudden homelessness of a client that prevents processes from happening. Profit pushing is the center of motivation and this messaging is packaged in saccharin sweet anecdotes to encourage extra billing at all costs. This leads to job expectations that are unrealistic for long term sustainability to hit target metrics. Many do not sustain this high expectation because of the difficulty to balance normal life and many lose their drive to try as pressure increases to hit high metrics in essentially an unwinnable battle. Those who fail are short shifted quickly and made to feel very inadequate. While those who rock it inevitably burn out fast due to the inability to sustain high demands in a very draining field and will find other work just to regain life balance and reduce stress. Pressure to bill more than 32-35client hours in IHS/ILS and cramming admin, meetings, travel time, trainings, phone coordination all into the remaining 8-5hrs is difficult and working over 40 hrs is met with stern lectures. This leads to many employees falsely reporting what hours they work, often donating many hours just to avoid the trouble of being told off. As a result, employees falsify their hours often to fit the 80%/20% model which shows leadership false efficiency and metrics, which drives further demands on increasing billing or client hours on an already strained expectation. Advancement is limited and anything you advance to will always be the lowest paid in the industry. Raises are often dangled before employees to increase retention but then revoked quickly on any silly technicality to avoid giving the raise. Most are told they will be reviewed in 3 months ....every 3 months. Many employees will leave after legit going above and beyond and never quite getting the dangled carrot.

Serious Systemic Issues

Pros

I loved being able to work with the clients we served. The job can be difficult, but is very rewarding. I was also able to work with some of my peers that I still highly respect and trust. It's pretty easy to move up quickly in the company (but this is unfortunately due to extremely high turnover).

Cons

I worked at SLS for about two years, and held multiple positions at the company. There are many serious issues going on here. If you're looking for a place to make a difference and gain experience working with adults with mental illness, this may be a great field for you - but you may want to look for another company if you'd like to avoid major burnout and plenty of company drama. Lack of cultural sensitivity and diversity inclusion training is painfully evident, even though the company’s clientele is made up almost solely of people from diverse, marginalized populations. Executive leadership consistently the buck onto middle management when things go wrong and revenue goals are not met, while middle management is set up to fail by impossible workloads and little to no support from higher-ups. Upper management claims they want feedback from mid-level and entry-level employees, but if you speak up about the issues you and your team are experiencing (no matter how professionally/respectfully), you are scolded for spreading gossip or not being positive enough to fit the company culture. Almost the entire senior leadership team is made up of the CEO's family, which leads to lack of true accountability at the highest levels. Family ties were even hidden when a new exec was hired to create the illusion that you don't have to be related to the CEO in order to move up in the company. If you're looking to make a difference, feel supported in your role, and find a company you can grow into a career with, please don't be fooled by what will probably be a great sell during your interview - this is not a company that will follow through on their promises. There's so much manipulation and dysfunction on a daily basis, and you do not have to work in an environment like that just to get experience in the field. Find somewhere that will support you in the work that you do - places like that really do exist.

Thank you for taking the time to review your experience with us at SLS. We are disappointed to hear that while you enjoyed working with our clients, you did not enjoy your time here overall. In regards to some of your feedback - family ties at SLS have never been a secret, as we are proudly a family owned and run business! We love that we have so many people who refer their family and friends to work with us, because it shows us that they love where they work enough to bring their loved ones aboard. We have 2 individuals on our executive leadership team of 4 that are not family. Almost all of our general leadership is made up of non-family who have been promoted into their roles because they were well deserving - not due to turnover. We care very much about the feedback of all of our employees, and we are sorry to hear that you did not feel that your voice was heard while you were here. That is never our goal, and are disappointing to hear about this. We encourage you to reach out to us directly to share your feedback, so that we can learn more about your unique experience, and how we can improve moving forward. Again, thank you for your time and feedback! -Olivia Weidner, Talent Acquisition Manager

Pros

Getting to know clients and hearing their stories about this company and clean facility overall.

Cons

Phony management, not equipped to handle persons with SPMI's, no true support, quick turnover, unprofessional, horrible and unhealthy food for clients and employees, should be looked into by the state, most of upper management are either related or married to each other, training is only a week and is very rushed, no certification needed to pass prescription medications, did CPR course online without physically using dolls, residents pay more than they should to live in these facilities, no real therapists or psychiatrists on staff for their mentally ill customized living programs.

I'm disappointed to hear about your expereience at SLS. I'm afraid you may have not understood the setting in which we provide care. Our programs are not intended to be treatment facilities which is why we do not have licensed psychologists or psychiatrists on staff. Clients may chose to live in a setting with professionals on site; however, our setting is designed to be more independent, and the clients who live in our programs have chosen to live in our settings because of that. One of the service that we do provide is assisting our clients in scheduling appointments with those providers and ensuring they are seeing the providers regularly to maintain their mental and physical wellbeing. Familial relationships are no secret within the organization and do not just occur within management. We actually consider the family relationships a good thing; it shows that employees like working at SLS and have recruited their friends and family to work here as well! I'm sorry to hear that you had a bad experience at SLS. It clear that we need to do a better job of training and educating staff about the setting that our clients are chosing to live in and what our role is within their larger care team. Thank you for taking the time to review us, Ali Bevers
