Pros

Easy to get hired here because so many scenic artists and carpenters know to avoid this place like the plague. Like another reviewer here said it is easy to work at your own pace and extend your time as a freelancer because of disorganization and ignorance on the part of the owners and upper management.

Cons

Apathy and low morale among the full time staff. Sexist and racist attitudes overlooked and seemingly encouraged by management and owners. Low pay. Disorganized project management. No room for advancement.

Pros

Spaeth has an impressive roster of clientele that present challenges year round to its creative staff. This environment is a sort of bootcamp for creatives. As a respected member of the team your skillset is valued allowing you to perform your marketed skills effectively while working alongside an elite squad of artists where you have the chance to teach your methods while learning and absorbing from others. The team is pleasant, like minded and focused on making great work.

Cons

The quickly evolving environment can be stressful as there are often many jobs happening at one time and you are often required to multitask on several projects at once, but the reward of seeing the work complete is fulfilling and the skills one can gain are worth accepting the challenges and working hard for.

Worst scenic shop to work for in the city. Low wages and poor management.

Pros

Creative, fun work. If you are talented and experienced you can basically do whatever you feel like as long as you complete the job. Upper management is completely clueless as to methods and materials so there is no reason to produce quality work in a timely fashion. In fact, the burnt-out full timers know that working harder only creates more work for themselves, so they do the bare minimum. And smart freelancers will take as long as possible in order to keep working.

Cons

Petty and unreasonable owners who are also ungrateful and disrespectful towards their workers. Incompetent and duplicitous middle management will take credit for your successes and blame you for their failures. The staff is actually intimidated by scenic industry professionals and will do their best to minimize or entirely divert the recognition of your contribution in the eyes of the owners who are easily fooled these costly sycophants. The longterm full timers are mired in bored cynicism and resentment towards the disfunctional hierarchy and getting too close to them may affect your own morale. However much more readily apparent above and beyond this counterproductive toxic atmosphere is the fact that this place is one of the lowest paying scenery shops in the NYC area bar none. Unless you are a complete novice you would do well to avoid this mess at all costs. The company is a complete laughing stock amongst NYC scenic professionals!
