Pros

The benefits package is great

Cons

SomaLogic is a company who operates on the perceived value of their product instead of the actual value of their product. The SomaScan assay does not provide any genuine diagnostic value to the healthcare industry, as evidenced by their recent repeated commercialization failures. Throughout the pandemic, SomaLogic has lost its CFO, CGO, and head of human resources. I am a skeptic of both the utility of the SomaScan assay and the accuracy of the results generated: the data they provide is "an average of an average of an average," and I would not be surprised to see this company develop into a Theranos type of situation. The company is "top heavy," with many layers of unnecessary management thwarting the innovation of its employees. As others have mentioned, PhDs make terrible managers at SomaLogic, and I would not recommend working at this company to anybody. There is a strange culture in the assay services department, where management actively reminds their team that they are replaceable. Half of the assay services employees are exempt and the other half of the employees are non-exempt, despite doing the same work, and management is notorious for vocalizing how inappropriate it is to discuss salaries. In addition to this, the assay services team is very young and tenure is non-existent in the department. I do not feel that I developed any meaningful skills at SomaLogic that I could carry with me to my next employer. If you are looking for a means to pay your rent, working here will suffice as long as you live far away from Boulder and are okay with commuting. If you are looking for a career I would proceed with caution.

Pros

The company has great proteomic analysis capabilities.

Cons

The leadership has lost its mind. They stopped communicating with the employees and only send out mandates via email with no explanations. They have instituted a covid vaccine mandate and a proof of vax card policy to enter the building. They told employees to submit any questions regarding the mandates to their managers. Many have submitted questions and no answers were ever given. Some have been fired for questioning the mandates. Some (both vaccinated and unvaccinated) are quitting because they disagree with the mandates. The company CEO has become tyrannical and has created much divisiveness. He makes company policy based on his political views and what he sees in the mainstream news - shocking for the CEO of a scientific research company. Employees are not valued and threatened or fired for speaking up. Management lacks any kind of courage or integrity to support their employees. HR is as dysfunctional as a department in a company can be. They lose all their talent and can't hire anyone to even remotely replace them. I have interviewed some very talented software engineers with the desired skillset and experience only to have them denied because of "cultural fit." They seem to be creating a culture of employees that just do what they are told. Creativity and questioning are punished here. They will fight against giving promotions or raises. All talented employees just leave for better pay and promotions elsewhere. Employees are grossly over-worked, understaffed, and new hires lack qualifications and experience. There is a huge lack of talent and leadership. It's just a miserable work experience when you lose your best people and reinforcements never arrive to bail you out. My professional advice is to stay far away from this place. There are so many better options in this job market.

Heartless and Failing

Pros

Wonderful co-workers who are highly intelligent. No one deserves to be laid off days ahead of Christmas.

Cons

A heartless mass layoff a week before Christmas, obviously done to try to save a business that is failing. We were all overworked and dedicated ourselves 100% to try to help this sinking ship and they rewarded us with a layoff that we were promised wouldn’t happen. There are more layoffs in the future and I will be surprised if they are not purchased in the next year. For so many highly intelligent people that work and run this company it astonishes me how they have no concept on how to run a business or how to be successful outside of the lab. This company is run by emotionless, heartless leaders who have no idea how to successfully commercialize a business. A tremendous amount of intelligence wasted if you cant move the technology out of the lab and into the hands of those who can actually use it and need it.
