Pros

Great Christmas Party Social office. A lot of younger / junior staff makes the office a lively place to work. Does not suffer from office Politics or an overloaded management structure. Paid in an hourly rate so you get paid for every hour you work.

Cons

Poor work life balance. I had to give up a lot of personal pursuits outside of work due to the expected long hours and pressure of working here. Solaris has a culture of 'if you're not working 50 plus hours a week then you are lazy'. Often feels like a sweat shop. Low pay for consulting engineering. They put a lot of pressure on younger engineers to carry the company and work long hours to get projects completed in continually tight deadlines. Easy place to burn out. The staffing policy of this place is keep a few older engineers on the pay roll to win projects then hire young, work them hard, give them marginal salary increases, then let them leave and repeat with a new young hire. Company reduced the entire staff salaries by 10% Office location is horrible.

Great Workplace & Good Co-Workers

Pros

You're paid hourly, so all of your work and overtime is compensated. Commute from Vancouver and anywhere west is not as bad, as you're going against traffic most of the time. Co-workers are really easy going and lots of social events in the office. Career wise, this is a great company for learning about the industry and gain experience as an engineer. A mentor and a buddy is assigned to all new hires and gives invaluable career advice. You will also make a lot of connections with clients and other companies.

Cons

There is no RRSP matching for those who wants to save for retirement.

Pros

Good location, seldom in traffic jams because we drive in opposite direction of downtown traffic. Some great people to work with, willing to teach but sadly they are not appreciated.Like me who are staff, they have been served lay off notice after working for more than 8years.

Cons

Bare minimum benefits,we have to pay part of insurance. Its a sweat shop, sometimes we have to work till midnight to please the client. We work the hardest but least appreciated. If you know somebody at the top or you can talk, you can easily get to the top.Its not what you know but who you know that matters. Its run by husband and wife team,so there are many husband and wife teams and family members in the company. You have to accept the conflict of interest that exist. We have just been laid off but not paid Termination Pay .They prefer you to be a contractor not a staff.Staffs get laid off first.
