Dysfunctional HR Function

Pros

Working for a world class paediatric hospital. Front line patient and family facing employees are skilled and dedicated and are working towards the common good. Strong brand recognition.

Cons

Front line employees are dedicated and committed, too bad they are “supported” by the most dysfunctional HR department ever. Poor senior leadership of the function with little to no strategic direction, infighting for power and prestige amongst Directors and a mentality that working staff like dogs is acceptable and encouraged. Political, catty and soul sucking are the only words adequate enough to describe working in this environment on a day to day basis. Long time employees with a “know everything, share nothing, and don’t dare change anything” miserable attitudes. Open gossip, backstabbing and absolutely unprofessional behaviour are the norm, and “leadership” does nothing except pay lip service to the ongoing issues. Turnover stats within the function are a clear indication of the deep issues that plague the group, but the dead wood at the top continues on, blissfully ignorant, lining their pockets at the expense of junior staff who are grossly underpaid. The organization is amazing, this function is not and is detrimental to the ongoing success of SickKids. Time to make some significant changes, starting at the very top.

Pros

Optimal if you want a job that allows work-life balance. Flexibility with work hours. If you need to take parental leave, SickKids provides top-ups.

Cons

Job salaries aren't competitive. Human Resources doesn't know how to answer your questions most of the time. Things are very slow here, and you have to jump through a lot of hoops to get anything done here.

Toxic Work Environment

Recommend

Business outlook

Pros

Location is easy to get to. A good “brand name” to put on your resume, as people don’t know how bad it really is.

Cons

Always too much work with too little people. Upper management is aggressive and coercive. No work life balance, expected to be logged in checking your email 24 hours a day. Upper management calls you out for your mistakes in front of 20+ people to embarrass you and make an example of you. Pay isn’t very good either, making none of this worth it. Various people have left soon after starting or gone on stress leave because of the management.
