Toxic and Unsafe

Pros

Great mission, and connections with the community partnerships and volunteers

Cons

Toxic work structure, no accountability for upper management - gaslighting, harmful "executive decisions" with no formal process, hiring/ changing roles and job descriptions with no formal process, negligent use of funds through unfair pay scale and volunteers, regular damaging of building equipment and food without regular reports or proper safety procedures (the amount of food damaged or wasted by staff alone was immense but they are a food insecurity non profit), very political environment where work was not based on merit but "popularity".

Pros

There are some wonderful people who work here and some amazing programs

Cons

And there are some people who make destructive, wasteful decisions unchecked by leadership. Not to mention the, favoritism, sexism, racism, ageism…

Pros

The staff are the best part of the organization. Everyone at all levels believes whole heartedly in the mission and the motivation is contagious and energizing. Atmosphere in the offices is also very relaxed and casual in terms of dress code and communication style. It's a fun and positive place to work the majority of times.

Cons

Very little opportunity to advance through the company ranks or earn a living wage if you don't mind staying at your current level. The middle/upper levels are well entrenched and either never leaving or if they do leave it's under tense circumstances and their positions aren't backfilled to save money. After recent losses the current upper management is also very disconnected from day to day operations of almost all regular teams and so you end up explaining your job to superiors over and over again but they never retain understanding of your job or the needs you may have. They're also always complaining about funding and so most staff feel like their job is in danger. On a practical level I didn't receive a single cost of living raise or performance review of any kind in the 3 years working there and the excuse is always "money is tight, next year though" but it never happens. So when people leave because they weren't getting raises they hire brand new employees at higher rates than the people who left even though they start with no experience. So the most experienced staff are the lowest paid and have the most responsibility.
