Very poor management, definitely a company to avoid

Pros

Decent office space and equipment, even if office is in Woodbridge. Compensation was middle-tier for industry. Some of the people are very nice and considerate. Very conservative and hawkish, if that matches your politics

Cons

The management is just atrocious. The CEO micromanages to the point where it hinders anyone's ability to do their job because he doesn't have time to give approval on things, but forbids projects from moving forward without his approval. There also were remarks made by or tolerated by company leadership that were wholly inappropriate for a professional work environment. The CEO is married to the CFO, and they are both prone to changing their minds about things often, employees be damned. Once they hired a man in a support role in the HQ in Woodbridge, then several weeks later changed their minds about his role and told him he had to move to Denver or lose his job (he moved to Denver). Most of the other VPs also have poor management skills and working under them is very difficult. No processes were efficient, and the company was too cheap (or broke) to pay for the necessary software packages to allow employees to do their jobs (example: Adobe Acrobat Pro). Many of the project management and senior technical staff had only high school or online college degrees; these are not industry leaders, despite what the website claims. Sev1tech holds only one major contract (as a subcontractor), and if they lose that they're basically guaranteed to lay off everyone. Summary: Ignore the other Glassdoor reviews that were obviously written by the company's HR department. This is a place to avoid, no matter how hard they try to sell you. Many employees I worked with have since left the company, and the ones that have not are over-worked and under-supported, and receive no sympathy from a management team that only sees its employees as good for something if they are bringing in lots of money.

Sev1Tech Response
11y
While we respect that everyone is entitled to an opinion, in the above review there are false/fraudulent statements made on Sev1Tech's business, its practices, and its employees. I'd like to address the major claims made: --The HR dept has never posted a user review on this site--we only RESPOND to reviews and particularly fraudulent reviews, and in those cases we identify ourselves. --We do have a local Virginia employee who voluntarily took a long-term assignment in our Colorado office. He has expressed nothing but positive feedback about his experience to his peers and to management. He was never threatened to lose his job. --Nearly all of Sev1Tech's employees have a bachelors or master's degree plus relevant certifications in their area of expertise. It is not fair to discount our U.S. Veteran employees who burned 20+ years of military experience for our country and have not had the opportunity to complete their degrees. Additionally, we have a number of employees currently completing bachelors degrees at accredited universities. Our employees take advantage of our generous training program and tuition assistance benefit in order to pursue degrees and advanced certifications. Amongst our management team, a number have advanced certifications/degrees e.g. PMP, Six Sigma, Masters, and are former high-ranking government officials and U.S. military Veterans. --While we do have a few big subcontracts that employ several of our staff, those contracts don't make up our entire business. We have multiple large prime federal and prime commercial contracts. Subcontracts make up less than 30% of our work. --We have many efficient processes that go on behind the scenes, many of which are to the employee's benefit. As with any process or program, there is always room for improvement. So to the "inefficient point," I've always been told...rather than complain, why not offer suggestions or solutions? --We've been successful thus far b/c our CEO is involved in programs and genuinely cares about our clients and their missions. He gets involved in high-profile projects as needed and doesn't "forbid" a project's progress. --And lastly, yes, it is true that the CEO and the CFO (me) are married...and have been for nearly 20 years. Simply put...we work well as a team, as have so many other husband/wife business owners. I think "changing their minds about things often" is not true. We've had some of the same core policies in place since the company's inception, but in a healthy growing organization the business evolves and so do its practices and policies to meet the changing needs. Pros

Great CEO vision to expand and decent benefits.

Cons

Sev1 looks at acquiring companies to expand its portfolio but don’t believe you’ll be valued as an employee. Sev1 takes care of the OG Sev1 employees. Lots of nepotism and favoritism amongst the ranks. Despite two acquisitions no lessons learned. The OG’s push back on your expertise however there’s a reason why they are busy acquiring other companies. Reorganization? No problem but don’t expect to be leading a team if you’re a part of the organization acquired. Expect to be put on the back burner. Oh you lost a contract? How do you expect to win if you don’t have the background and refused to let those with the background provide their input? So many leaders are clueless of what’s really happening within the organization.

Pros

- good place to start a career working for a government agency - quarterly bonuses as part of GGOB (Great Game Of Business)

Cons

- no room for advancement, you essentially stay in the same position unless you can find another contract to jump on - quarterly bonuses are given out to everyone, not merit based - pretty much impossible to get a salary increase - send an email to HQ and hopefully hear back in a week - disconnect between HQ and field, they don't seem to know what we do or how contracts are doing
