Ethics-driven research firm

Pros

It's an ethics driven research consulting firm and its leaders really stand for having an impact and not just making a profit. It's an inspiring work environment where you get to work with a diverse team and in locations across the world. What I particularly appreciate is that the management values intellectual curiosity and people who keep the bigger picture in mind - even though sometimes you can get caught up in your day to day project work. I'd recommend the workplace to researchers who want to be part of impact-driven research while adhering to high academic standards and research ethics.

Cons

The company is constantly changing and it can be challenging to keep up with the pace. Given the nature of the firm and the industry and contexts it operates in, the work is fast-paced and can be demanding from a project management perspective.

Pros

I was in the middle of my professional career when I started working with Samuel Hall in Afghanistan. I was provided with capacity-building opportunities both internally and externally. The capacity building and support received from the management and the team enabled me to be promoted in the structure and even experienced different domains of work. I witnessed that many colleagues had similar opportunities and even they were supported when they wanted to change their careers and encouraged to promote in the structure. The SH was a start-up as well when I joined, during its development always they were putting in place the “Human” and positive impact as its priority. Yes, if you would like to take the real challenge of research and looking for a positive impact, I would suggest joining SH.

Cons

The work is subject to political volatility and funding to countries like Afghanistan so even when they faced these issues as social enterprises they tried to self-investing in some projects when the means allowed.

Pros

At Samuel Hall, employees have the opportunity to make a significant impact in the work they do. The organization is dedicated to addressing critical global challenges, and the projects undertaken have a direct and positive influence on the lives of individuals and communities around the world. Being part of such meaningful work can be incredibly fulfilling. Samuel Hall fosters a highly collaborative work environment where teamwork is valued and encouraged. Is it demanding? Yes. But you will find yourself part of a team where everyone is on a mission. Samuel Hall values diversity and inclusion, fostering a workplace that respects and appreciates different perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences. This inclusive culture promotes creativity, innovation, and a sense of belonging, where everyone's contributions are recognized and celebrated. Samuel Hall provides excellent opportunities for international exposure and travel. The organization operates in multiple countries and partners with clients and stakeholders worldwide. This exposure allows employees to gain valuable cross-cultural experiences and broaden their horizons. Fieldwork is actively encouraged, part of the DNA of the organization.

Cons

Working at Samuel Hall will - at times - involve a heavy workload and tight project deadlines. The nature of the work and the commitment to delivering high-quality results may require employees to handle multiple tasks simultaneously. This can create a fast-paced and high-pressure environment that demands effective time management and prioritization skills. The management at Samuel Hall can be demanding, expecting employees to meet and exceed expectations. While this dedication to excellence can be motivating, it requires self-care to maintain a work-life balance. Be prepared for high expectations! This is not McKinsey, it is an organization with a mission, a social entreprise. Samuel Hall has experienced some growing pains and organizational changes: adjustments to processes, systems, and strategies as it evolves. While these changes are necessary for growth and innovation, they have sometimes created uncertainty or additional work as employees adapt to new ways of doing things.
