Pros

The coworkers are great, and the culture is good. My favorite part is only working four days a week, and the excitement of working in an operating facility.

Cons

It is located in the middle of nowhere. The closest city of any size is Bay City, and the closest city with over 20K people is Lake Jackson. A lot of people commute, but with working 10 hours a day, adding an extra couple of hours for commuting isn't ideal. Not a lot of things are computerized; most of the design work is paper-based.

Decent place to work

Pros

The company is reasonably well run, but not exceedingly so. Compensation is on par with employers in the field.

Cons

There is a general feel that the new CEO (Koehl) is not in it for the long haul but rather to make his mark in cost cutting and leave. While we are not a publicly traded company, there is also the feel that quarterly or annual earnings and expenditures are driving decision making. This coupled with the remote location and lack of amenities in the area make working here hard.

Pros

You get paid every two weeks. Front line supervisors (for the most part) haven't lost common sense. And I'll throw in that the fact that we are out in the middle of no where as a pro. When management is engaged and the "we team" is working together it is a great place to work.

Cons

Unfortunately the "we team" is in a low point right now. It seems to come in cycles, but this is a new low that hasn't been seen in years. Management has taking a reactionary stance on many things and try to call it being pro-active. Life in the NSC is great, they constantly send emails out talking about the parties they have, fundraisers they participate in, and they are sure to tell the workers how great their life is every chance they get. Inside the protected area is different. We are told that we need to get more done with less people. Quick to put people on probation for making non-consequential mistakes and being sure to make sure everyone knows what happened. You're not out there to do a good job. You are out there spending every moment trying not to get in trouble. Many people work right up to the fatigue rule (maxed out on allowed overtime) because there is currently a string of people leaving for less pay, and there are a few more leaving before the end of the year.
