Pros

The diverse group of services SCI Engineering provides is incredible. SCI has grown from offering essentially one or two technical services in 1978 to now routinely performing literally dozens of different engineering and scientific specialties, some of which are extremely unique. From field technicians to high level engineering positions, a majority of the SCI has team members have been with the firm for 10, 15, or 20+ years (there are several folks with 25-35+ year of experience working for SCI). Having a work/life balance is important and the culture at SCI supports that balance.

Cons

The nature of our business breeds a very fast-paced environment. It requires our team members to be "on their toes" at all times and to continually stay one or two steps ahead.

Pros

You spend a lot of time working independently inspecting construction materials with many breaks between tests. The upper management seems to be of higher quality, though middle management is lacking. Many of the lower level employees are interesting and fun to be around but there is very high turnover. SCI offers great benefits and has good company wide activities.

Cons

Middle management can be inept and uncommunicative. The pay rate is awful. The work is essentially construction labor. There is essentially no opportunity for advancement. Hours are long and intermittent. 12 and 14 hour days were common. Also showing up in the morning to discover there was no work for you. As an hourly employee this makes budgeting very difficult. Overtime is often available during the summer but is balanced out during low construction times in the winter.
