Pros

You really do get to meet incredible people working in a public library. Most of the time work feels meaningful.

Cons

RCLS is owned (?) by a third party, LSSI and they are running us into the ground. There's no consideration for individual branches and branch issues. They're cutting people like crazy (managers and employees) and making some manage two branches instead of one manager per branch and as you can imagine it hurts its employees.

Pros

It's fulfilling. Helping patrons is very satisfying and the day flies by. Not all library locations are high-energy like ours. Other locations are quite boring to be honest. However, there are so many roles to be filled in a public library and career advancement is achievable if you're willing to work for it.

Cons

A county library system is low pay. Very low pay! The skills required however are significant and the two definitely don't align. In a given day we run programs and events for people of all ages, do all marketing in-house, manage databases, write and manage grants, support patrons with a multitude of technology issues, and much more.
