Stay away

Pros

The junior staff are really talented and passionate about the work. Pockets of the organization are run well.

Cons

There were red flags about the Executive Director from the beginning and I wish I had listened to my gut. She's a narcissist prone to angry outbursts who cares more about her reputation than serving the organization's mission and values loyalty over competence. Her personality and management style trickles down through the organization. People are constantly stressed out and there's a ton of infighting and backstabbing in the organization. I cannot say this strongly enough: stay away from RFA. It's the kind of toxic work environment that ruins careers.

Pros

Great researchers. However, your time will be tracked to the minute and your vacation will need to be approved. It's like a law firm but with much lower salaries.

Cons

Top-level staff are incompetent, insecure, and frightened about their own job stability. It seems like a lot of inexperienced people are at the highest levels of the org, with a singular focus on relentlessly micromanaging researchers below them to justify their own positions ... which explains why they struggle to maintain funding and why turnover is rampant. Their mandate of race equity and social justice is also laughable considering that a bunch of white women are leading the charge (badly). Don't expect any help from HR, which doesn't exist, and prepare for dismissive and vindictive management practices. Look at the negative reviews; they are accurate.

Toxic and inequitable workplace

Recommend

Pros

Remote work. Some colleagues are supportive (but high staff turnover means that those same colleagues are likely to leave).

Cons

This company offers zero/minimal professional development opportunities, the remote work policy is inconsistent and inflexible, there’s inequities in the salaries offered to people (even within the same position some people are paid drastically different wages), and there’s a lack of transparency and consistency around the promotion process. Overall, leadership in the company have created a toxic hierarchical workplace that enforces inequitable work practices and is steeped in white supremacist work culture.
