Avoid working here

Pros

- Flexible hours and good work/life balance - Can work from home - A lot of process has been implemented and has really helped the company, although there are still some pretty big issues that need to be addressed - The company has a very unique product and is a leader in home design software - Communication is great between some teams

Cons

- The technology stack is extremely outdated and the team is struggling to adopt modern technologies and frameworks; little to no time is allocated for refactoring and improving the code base since revenue will always take priority over software quality, essentially if you want something to be done the right way, you need to put in OT. - The business is always pressuring the development team to perform unreasonable amounts of work while hitting unrealistic deadlines with minimal and inaccurate acceptance criteria, which in turn leads to: - A constant state of panic and stress - A very toxic team dynamic - Unhappy employees - The need to work OT - Skipping QA and releasing buggy software straight into production - Not much variety in work; you'll be building the same exact same thing for years - Office gives off a very depressing vibe and not many people seem happy to work there - Terrible culture - Very low chance you'll feel like a valued employee - Still feels like a startup company even though they've been around since 1999 - Opportunity to grow professionally and expand on skill set is very limited - If you're a developer, you definitely won't learn as much here as you would somewhere else who actually puts care into building modern, quality software products. You'll get bored really quickly as the current technology is essentially jQuery and Java. - Very high turnover rate

Pros

1- Lenient work hours. 2- Comfortable chairs. (Although it took the CEO a long while to get them). .

Cons

There are so many Cons, the company is really terrible and a pseudo-company, family-business in a sense. But I will go through the main negative aspects: 1- The Renoworks team doesn't want to accept criticism or learn to improve and this mentality is obvious in the workplace and even on this website. The responses they have given on this thread are very symbolic of that, Instead of a willingness to improve, they are here shilling for the company in long responses that are often irrelevant and full of falsehoods and self-aggrandisement backed by average and below-average numbers and results. 2- The "Senior" Software Developers lack the necessary experience and skill-set. The code-review process is incorrect and they do not properly manage commits and code-reviews through Github or other mediums. The QA is also terrible. They lack the staging environment to properly test the software and ensure that the bugs they found in the QA process are newly introduced. The code is buggy and essentially Javascript and Jquery without a proper framework and it relies on an old backend VB engine and on-the-fly, badly-designed MySQL database. 3- The UI/UX is poorly and whimsically decided. The Mockups are done in Photoshop and not in a actual UX mockup applications such as Balsamiq and others, and the products often look inconsistent and are not very responsive on mobile devices and so forth. There is also no uniform design style-guide for default styles and stylistic practices. 4- There are no Dev Ops. So the computers are set-up badly. Most modern software companies have laptops hooked to monitors to ensure this portability and allow employees to be able to project their screens to projectors in meetings or work from home. But this company is far from any of that although it is essentially a software company. 5- The company does lay off people to cut costs and manipulate its revenue chart, but it is often new employees with higher skill-sets that are dismissed, which is why the company is full of unqualified old-timers. 6- The company has hired people from various ethnic backgrounds, but there is a stench of racism and racial jokes that are not addressed but kind of accepted within the company. It often comes from the white employees that are usually not holding college diplomas and very rural, and reflects on how they interact with the minority of employees from those different cultures. When I was employed there, I head the N word a number of times and got a lot of offensive questions about my culture.. 7- In my employment there, I overheard many statements about illegal measures and tax evasion, that are spoken with pride among old-timers, which lead me to believe a lot of shady things were taking place so that the company puffs up for potential investors. Summary: If you're looking to get employed there, know that Renoworks is very unstable and shady.

Pros

Relaxed atmosphere with friendly people. CEO did basically all the work keeping the business afloat and he was great to work for.

Cons

No technical leadership. The senior software people are just plain bad and only got to where they are based on sticking around for a long time. Pay wasn't good. Business was barely above water when I was working there. Software stack was awful. VB6 still?!? Bad office location.

Renoworks Software Response

Thank you for your review. We appreciate your feedback. Our comments in response to your post: - We have a team of over 20 people who get work done here. Our CEO has done a lot of business development historically but our SVP Sales for Enterprise solutions is an absolute beast and wins more new business than the CEO does. Our customer success manager has instrumental in winning a lot of new projects with existing clients and growing each account by providing outstanding service and value added data analysis for their marketing. We have also formed a new team for our small business product for contractors, Renoworks Pro, that will generate 10% - 15% of revenue in 2016 (up from less than 5% the previous year). This line will continue to grow. - Re: technical leadership: generally people in any company, end up in more senior roles by sticking around vs. bouncing around. We have a blend of youth and gray hairs on the dev side leading the team. On the whole have done a great job of creating industry leading technology. -We recognize the need to modernize some of our technology stack and have been working hard to do so. This work takes time when your secret sauce is tied up in years of legacy code. Our core technology is complex and is the reason why no one has been able to come along put us out of business overnight but it makes migrating to new technologies slower and harder than any of us would like. - In Calgary, the oil and gas sector distorts perceptions of pay so compared to those types of companies in boom time we don't pay as well. But in general, we offer competitive pay and opportunities to own stock through options for high performers.I'm sure the 100,000+ employees and contractors out of work in Alberta in the oil and gas industry think we pay quite well. - Business has experienced cash flow squeezes in the past and we have to run a lean operation. We did raise $500,000 from public markets in the Fall of 2015 (a sign of investor confidence in what we're trying to do) most of which was invested into growth initiatives. We are on sound financial footing currently and are on track for a great year. - Our office location in NE Calgary is outside of downtown. While not central, it is accessible from all over the city with major roadways so commute times are reasonable for most people throughout the entire city and surrounding communities. Parking is free. We are also moving into new office space later this year, nearby, so we will soon have a newer feel to our office.
