Pros

Work Life Balance - Workload is relatively light

Cons

I had a negative experience at Red Wing's corporate office and I found the company to have a significant problem with some of its sales leaders not being qualified to lead a cross-functional team of people (in functions across more than just their small sales teams). Sales leadership (directors/vps) on some of the smaller brands at Red Wing were particularly clueless, were frustrating to work with on a regular basis, and were surprisingly mean for a small, MN company. I'm confident that top leadership at Red Wing knows that they have people management issues, but I didn't see much action being taken to address the problems or to respond to some of these issues (vs. just turning a blind eye to the problems repeatedly because conflict like this can be difficult). In addition, the company has a strange sales/boy’s club culture that didn’t feel very welcoming to me in a lot of ways. This culture definitely creates a feeling of their being insiders and outsiders at Red Wing and I’m not sure how a company can thrive in this type of environment. There are certainly a lot of good people at Red Wing, but the overall culture was very disappointing to me and I would highly recommend avoiding Red Wing as a possible place of employment.

Pros

Great products, amazing quality and inspiring history.

Cons

From the resistance to join e-commerce and dated marketing tactics (hello COVID) to the old white dudes that make up the sr. leadership team, Red Wing is stuck in the past. While there are a couple of token female leaders, they are expected to nod along and not have a voice. Maybe this is because they are scared to get stabbed in the back (hello CMO who constantly talks poorly about his peers, his boss and the family) if they disagree with anything. When I joined RWSC nearly a decade ago, it was a much different company, ironically we used to be more progressive and I felt like I was contributing and my opinions were valued. In the past several years, the culture has deteriorated, especially for women.

Old, white males dominate

Pros

pretty good deal on shoes

Cons

RWSC is a sexist, non-inclusive culture led by old white men who hire younger white men to work for them. The leadership team veils their sexism and racism by hiring the occasional woman or person of color but those people are not treated equally. The few women who are in leadership roles succeed by falling in line with the old white men in charge. If you can get over the sexism and inclusivity, you will be challenged to get anything done in a culture that is antiquated, painfully slow and indecisive.
