Pros

If you have no aspirations, don't mind absurd hours for minimum wage and a management set up based on 'who you know, not what you know' then this will be a great job.

Cons

Over the last five years this company has been in constant decline. It has gone from award winners in 'Investors in People' to strike action. They have persistently wasted money on vanity projects and hair brained schemes while complaining they have no money to pay staff a decent wage. Forget pay rises, it doesn't matter how hard you work, nor how skilled or experienced you are, nor how much you invest your dedication and reliability, it is Fran Collins policy that everyone gets paid exactly the same. They have moved managers from their familiar areas to run other departments and wonder why nothing is working or progressing. More often than not, staff will find out important information from media outlets from the Island rather than senior staff given the woeful communication. Until Fran Collins moves on and takes her Condor buddies with her this company will continue to decline.

Firstly, thank you for taking the time to provide feedback. Red Funnel takes pride in hiring colleagues that meet our ‘TOGETHER’ values & ethos and we are very proud of our passionate workforce. We support all colleagues who wish to develop their career within the organisation and it’s for this reason that we have a dedicated Learning & Development Advisor in place. The L&D Advisor is available to discuss incentives such as Apprenticeships, Mentoring and Leadership Development. This internal commitment to allowing colleagues to grow and develop is indeed the very reason why you’ll have observed an evolvement in members of the management teams across different areas of the business. Red Funnel’s salaries are competitive and we continue to work closely with our recognised Trade Unions to review remuneration on an annual basis across all job roles. Over and above salary, we’re proud to offer a comprehensive benefit package which includes free car ferry and Red Jet ferry travel; 75% discount on South Western Railway, private medical/death in service insurance, long service awards, and a variety of other perks including staff parties and supported activities via our Social Committee. With respect to working hours, we would like to reassure you that our shift durations & rest breaks adhere to both the MCA and the Working Time Regulations. In relation to your point on projects, I’m unsure to which Red Funnel schemes you are referring to – however, I feel particularly proud of the following two: Refer a Friend (allowing colleagues to earn Amazon vouchers by referring a family member or friend) and our recently launched First-Class Customer Service scheme (empowering customers and colleagues to submit nominations for those going ‘over & above’). As of this writing, we have recognised and rewarded over 140 colleagues since we launched the Awards back in April. Lastly, Red Funnel have a dedicated Head of Communications who liaises with all stakeholders including colleagues. We feel strongly that our employees should be given the opportunity to be heard and to be heard often. For this reason we run various initiatives such as our ‘CEO Town Hall Videos’ where our CEO Fran Collins fields questions on a wide variety of topics. Further to this, we run an annual communications survey, giving colleagues another platform to share their thoughts on all facets of communication. If you would like to further discuss any of the matters raised in your review, please contact me, Cathy Doust (HR Manager) at cdoust@redfunnel.co.uk and I would be very happy to connect with you. Pros

There are so many colleagues at the lowest pay scale, that are understanding and helpful to any staff asking for help. there is a comradery that creates strong bonds. you get an allowance to use to travel to the isle of wight so creates the opportunity to travel there more often but with no discount to stay anywhere over there it limits this Pro massively.

Cons

the staff at the lowest pay scale are underpaid and over worked. there is never a manager to help until they ashow up to tell you youre not doing good enough. you work 12 hour shifts with only 40 minute breaks and the lack of support from the higher ups is too obvious. Employees are told on hot days to not eat or drink in front of customers but have jobs where their office is in a public area with no where to go to privately drink or eat, and when they try to leave to the staff areas they are then interrupted on their entitled breaks to deal with passengers and enquiries that managers wont. deal with. no matter how long youve been in your job role, no matter how skilled you become youre on the exact same wage as the new starters. theres no reason to be loyal to the company, theres a reason its used by uni students as a stop gap because its easy to avoid work and get paid the same as people genuienly trying. There isnt a good enough training regime (depending on which department you are) there is Obvious favouritism all over the company, staff feeding (free food whilst on shift) isnt offered to Everyone on the lowest pay scale - even if you work 12 hour shifts but there are managers and senior staff paid over 25000 that get staff feeding. people arent told anything in advance and

Hi there, we appreciate you taking the time to leave a review for Red Funnel. I’m pleased to hear that you feel the camaraderie with your colleagues is strong – we pride ourselves on hiring individuals who meet our ‘TOGETHER’ values & ethos and are very proud of our passionate workforce who work together as a team, going above & beyond and above all, having fun whilst doing it. Red Funnel offers employees free vehicle ferry and Red Jet travel to/from the Isle of Wight as part of our comprehensive benefits package, which also includes 75% discount on South Western Railway. Staff feeding is an additional benefit that is offered to every colleague within the Food & Beverage teams. Furthermore, we continue to work closely with our recognised Trade Unions to review remuneration on an annual basis. In relation to the other points you raise, we would like to reassure you that our shift durations & rest breaks adhere to MCA & Working Time Regulations – crew are rostered for breaks and a mess room is provided for this purpose. As it sounds that you’re still working at Red Funnel, I very much encourage you to speak with your Line Manager (or to me direct) for further clarification on eating and drinking whilst on shift. Contrary to what you described, we very much encourage you to stay energized and hydrated throughout the day and we allow short additional breaks whenever possible. Again, please connect with us for more clarification as it sounds like there may be some misunderstanding here. With respect to the presence of management, every sailing has an Onboard Services Officer who acts as a Line Manager. In our terminals, we have our Duty Operations managers, which are present during the vast majority of operating time. Regarding training and development, we support any colleagues who wish to develop their career within the organisation, Red Funnel has a dedicated Learning & Development Advisor who is available to discuss incentives such as Leadership Development, Apprenticeships and Mentoring. There are many colleagues in the business, especially at management level who have grown and developed with the company. If you’d like to learn more about career progression, do get in touch as I’d love to link you with our L&D Advisor, or even see about getting you to spend some time with someone who has progressed through various roles at Red Funnel. If you would like to discuss any matters raised in your review further, please contact me, Cathy Doust (HR Manger) at cdoust@redfunnel.co.uk (review response written on behalf of HR Director).
