Pros

Overall, people are dedicated to the mission at hand and it feels great to be part of something that directly helps survivors.

Cons

Upper management is not adequately trained. Sometimes, actions and policies are taken that are both unethical and unprofessional. Hotline staff is not adequately supported. Not much diversity.

Safe Helpline Needs to Improve

Pros

Hotline room generally has a good vibe with supportive co-workers. Part time work is flexible and you can make your own schedule.

Cons

There is little investment in training hotline staff on military specific knowledge. It makes addressing hotline visitor concerns difficult. High turnover for full time staff. Leadership for Safe Helpline isn't great but it looks like things might improve as they restructure the organization and remove certain people from leading the SHL hotline. The pay also used to be terrible 38k for a management position but that was recently increased. Hopefully this will attract better quality managers in the future. I am also very disappointed in the lack of knowledge from upper leadership. If you are looking for social justice/intersectional awareness I suggest applying elsewhere. The CEO was quoted as having zero awareness about sexual assault affecting native americans in relation to building pipelines. As a leader in sexual assault I expect leadership to be knowledgable of such issues. He was also quoted as not believing in "rape culture". Really disappointing to hear such ignorance from a supposed leader in our field. Upper management also lacks diversity. There is a clear division in diversity when you move up the ladder at this organization and I think that helps explain why the organization is stuck in the 90s.

Pros

I've been with RAINN for years as a supervisor and then licensed supervisor and have had a mostly positive experience ( speaking to my experience and no one else's). As a woman of color and a bilingual professional, I appreciate the inclusive and supportive environment RAINN (specifically my team) fosters/ has fostered for me. I have been blessed to have had some amazing managers over the years. The organization offers excellent flexibility ( I have always been approved any time off needed), generous PTO, and wellness days, allowing for a bit of healthy work-life balance. The new benefits under CareFirst Blue Cross Blue Shield are a great addition. RAINN is def making amends and trying to promote employee well-being, offering valuable resources like the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) with ComPsych, telemedicine and virtual counseling through First Stop Health, and the mindfulness platform, Headspace. These tools have been invaluable to staff who talk about it a lot of the hotline and my peers. I'm also pleased to see RAINN making significant DEI efforts in hiring, recruiting, and fostering inclusivity. They started with ongoing and consistent training on diversity, equity, and inclusion (which wasn't done prior) and has been a positive and noticeable change, creating a more inclusive workplace. It has people thinking and learning! There have been improvements in reporting options within the company, addressing MANY MANY MANY previous issues. The introduction of tEQuitable and Lighthouse Services ensures a confidential and safe space for reporting concerns, RAINN's trying and I hope stays committed to transparency and accountability. They are starting small but I do see others also motivated to make RAINN a much safer space. I hope to stay long enough to see the larger outcome of the changes happening.

Cons

One downside I've noticed over the years is a decline in the level of professionalism within the workforce, which seems to stem from the remote work culture brought on by COVID-19. This shift has impacted workplace dynamics and communication standards. I've seen the way some employees speak to their managers in ways I would never speak to my supervisor, manager, or even a peer. Respect should be something that is given and doesn't matter if you are upset. Some have spoken to others in a way I wouldn't even dream of speaking to my best friends or let alone my mother. Disrespect is disrespect. This is supposed to be a professional workplace. There are boundaries. Overall, RAINN is a compassionate and supportive place to work, continuously striving to meet the needs of its employees.
