Could be better, could be worse. Still much to learn after QFree buy out.

Pros

Flex time, excellent co-workers, work environment, free food. Plenty of challenging work. Upper management is extremely technical and hands on which is rare.

Cons

Salaries are well below market value. Benefits below market standard (if you have a family), especially vacation time (vacation time is very poor). Poor communication from upper management. Most of the development staff is unaware of project happenings outside of the project they are working on. Mentoring from seasoned employees seems lacking. Delegation and trust appears to be lacking. Much of the Sr. staff is overworked while other staff have little to no work. Appears that only a couple people in the company have decision power while others are ignored, including those is "high" positions.

Pros

There is a commitment to moving to newer technologies and deprecating/getting rid of the older ones. Pre-covid: Monthly luncheons, free snacks and drinks in the kitchens. There is a great HR team who genuinely seems to care about you as a person and not just as a body in the chair. Flex time in the event you need to go to the doctors or take care of loved ones. If you prove yourself they will be more flexible if something big comes up. Post-covid they became more flexible in work situation, allowing people to work from home or the office as they saw fit.

Cons

There is a very strong clique mentality which can make or break your time here. There are a select few that get the choice treatment when it comes to raises, work, and growth and development opportunities. If you are not a part of this core group it is an uphill battle to prove yourself. Even after proving yourself, if you’re not in the clique you get paltry raises in comparison to those that are in it. There is also way too much of a “we’ll fix that later” mentality. Rather than tackling the technical debt early they tend to add to the growing backlog and the quality of the products and the maintainability of them suffers for it.

Pros

My experience here was almost entirely positive. I found the teams for the most part friendly, and for the most part good friends. I still count almost everyone I left there to be good friends. They generally care a lot about best practices, and I learned a ton from the people there. In my tenure, I was (eventually) given a lot of room to learn and promote new tech. I was able to do a lot of good work that I am proud of. The decisions to leave, for me, was not an easy one at all. Other things - Good benefits - Flexible hours - Monthly catered lunches - Good holiday parties

Cons

Upper management things, especially since "Open Roads" became part of the Q-Free family, can be a bit mysterious. There are still growing pains related to that acquisition. Not all managers are as reasonable as the ones I had. I know others' who have left didn't have the positive experience I had. Because of the challenges of the industry (ITS) the customers are generally difficult to deal with. In response to that and deadline pressures, tech debt that slowed us down tended to get pushed along instead of resolved. This in turn puts people on certain projects, with certain levels of authority/responsibility in unreasonable positions.
