Pros

This is a great job you can do from home. If you are doing well, the raises are generous. I make as much hourly here as I do at my day job. Kids respect you and you don’t have to lesson plan. Technology and programs are easy to use.

Cons

There is a significant amount of uncompensated time required communicating with families and it is not right to force tutors to talk with families without compensating us. An initial phone call can take up to 45 minutes and parents feel entitled to your time because they are paying so much. They also email at all hours and sometimes it can feel like you are on call without compensation. There are also frequent cancellations which can be confusing and time consuming to manage and it can make your personal schedule challenging to predict. Tutors should receive a stipend for all of the extra hours we spend communicating with families who have no idea this is done on our personal time. We are already using our own computers, internet, and electricity to do this job.

Pros

It's great that you can work from anywhere--I work from home in my PJs.

Cons

They have you do a lot more work outside the time you're getting paid that doesn't really make the job worth it. You have to keep up with the curriculum as a new employee and communicate with the parent, management, and your student a lot throughout the week.

Pros

Prepnow has a number of pros - although the starting rate for tutors is somewhat low, the raises become better the longer you have worked there. You teach from your own home, avoiding travel time and expenses. The curriculum for the SAT and ACT courses is very good, so your students generally see an improvement in their scores. The people you work with are friendly and efficient. You don't have to deal with the marketing end of being a tutor - selling your talent, finding students, keeping students, etc. - they are already prepaid and ready to learn for 9 or 15 weeks. I enjoy working for Prepnow and am very happy that I found something that is so reliable and pays well that I can do from home.

Cons

As other tutors have noted, you are not compensated for the communication time you spend calling and emailing parents. The parents are paying top dollar for the tutoring services and expect 100% of your attention and interest in their child. I field emails, texts, and calls from parents throughout the day, and also spend a lot of time writing class-followups. I think per student I spend a total of 2 hours in communication time over the course of the average 15-class prep course, and I am not paid for this time. I am making less per hour than I would if I tutored locally in person, but on the other hand I don't have to deal with drumming up business and traveling to people's homes. I don't have much "co" to say - working for Prepnow is a real plus in my life.
