Pros

- All levels of management are willing to try new things and consider new ideas. - Amazing patrons. - Good collections. -Staff includes many fantastic people who care deeply about their community.

Cons

If you’re a professional with other options, you're going to want to do your homework before choosing this place. (The following cons might be more tolerable in non-management positions.) - The system as a whole is chaotic and disorganized, with high staff turnover rates at all levels. Frequently, when upper-level staff leave or are demoted, their position is eliminated and the work is distributed to those who remain. Currently feels like a game of human Jenga waiting to implode. If you thrive in theatrical, unpredictable work environments, it might suit you. - People are demoted without warning every few months. Administration will unnecessarily alert their peers to the changes before telling the person being demoted, creating an awkward and sad atmosphere for everyone. (Unless you like that kind of thing. There's definitely a "Game of Thrones" vibe around here.) - Verbal promises from Administration regarding salaries to be received upon promotion and financial reimbursement for professional development expenses incurred were not honored for multiple employees. - Administration employs emotionally damaging “management” tactics. This includes intentionally embarrassing staff members in front of their peers at meetings, and habitually talking poorly about staff to one another behind their backs. - In the same vein: Administration made an explicit goal to break down supportive staff friendships in order to ensure staff loyalty exclusive to Administration. Tread carefully, stranger.

Pros

It is a fast paced environment, some kind co-workers, lots of books and valuable services, and it is a customer service oriented job. This is a good job for someone in high school or college who needs to learn adaptability and how to survive anything.

Cons

The pay is stagnant. Higher value is placed on hiring temporary help instead of retaining the educated or more experienced employees. Upper management fosters a toxic culture through unethical behaviors and disorganized practices. An abusive 'survival of the fittest' mentality is encouraged from the top down.

Pros

Fulfilling job if you enjoy helping the public. Most other employees are pleasant to be around.

Cons

The pay is a joke. Little room for growth, and even if you do move up the pay isn't worth the stress. Upper management has zero regard for employees health or wellness. You're just a warm body to them. Benefits are subpar. Hazardous working conditions during snow storms and power outages. Upper management can be petty and just unnecessarily mean at times. Middle management does their best, but receives little to no actual management training and is left to figure it out on their own. This job will do everything and anything to cater to patrons and increase business, even if it means hurting the employees. Fulltime employees are capped at 37.5 hours a week. Obvious favoritism. They will dangle fulltime in front of employees, only to refuse it.
