Pros

Not a bad place to get your start and decent exposure to some high profile clients. But there are lots of better consulting firms to join in this city. Benefits are standard.

Cons

The company lacks in providing true consulting opportunities to employees. The CEO is all about maintaining appearances (so phony), has a single make shift office through Regus in Union Square, no real room for consultants to work or collaborate or learn. Very disingenuous CEO, lays off consultants quickly (less than a month/without warning/ if not on project) even though he lures them early on with a promise of a paid bench. During my time there, really good consultants/colleagues and directors were randomly let go, because they weren’t billable. Lots of better consulting firms to join in this town than Plaster Group. I transitioned into a full time opportunity at a client site as soon as it was available. I strongly recommend NOT joining Plaster Group unless you are desperate to get a foothold in this industry. Worst part about this firm is the lack opportunity, no real growth potential for consultants and a poor CEO who fakes it well. Super reactionary, unpredictable guy, if you are not drinking his koolaid, you are gone! Some good, intelligent senior level consultants and directors but the CEO can’t keep talent around because of how he poorly treats people. Not recommended.

Plaster Group Response

Plaster Group appreciates honest feedback and is respectful of the forum Glassdoor provides for employee reviews. We have become a better company because of constructive feedback received on Glassdoor. However, we feel we must respond to the false allegations contained in this particular review. The review appeared on Glassdoor after the termination of an employee who was found to have plagiarized materials for our product management and marketing practice area, and was caught shopping Plaster Group client business to other consulting firms. This employee was terminated for cause, and did not accept an employment opportunity with one of our clients as stated in the review. Plaster Group has long enjoyed a good reputation in the consulting industry and positive ratings on Glassdoor precisely because of the way we value our employees and the high caliber of consultants we employ. The success and satisfaction of our employees is paramount to Plaster Group and as such, Plaster Group's policies regarding bench time are more generous than most firms in our industry with ample time provided for employee development and transitioning to new client roles. Employees are not let go without substantial notice for job search, unless for violations of company policy, such as those described above.

Pros

We don't hire for a role; we hire for the company. It took me a while to truly internalise that. The end result is a cadre of extremely high-calibre professionals I'm proud to call colleagues. Likeability is a surprisingly high factor in selection, and I don't mean a sort of asinine, anodyne conviviality. We look for good people, in every sense of the term, though once in a while a bounder slips through.. :-) (though the latter don't last too long). I moved to consulting late in life and one of things I worried about is the "slickness" (aka sleaziness) factor that is one of the perceptions about this industry. It only took a few months on-site to realise that Shawn walks the talk. He scrupulously follows through on his advice to always "do the right thing" and "do what is best for the client". That is one of the reasons I find myself enjoying this career so much - it allows me to the best I can be, pushes me out of my comfort zone (since my default is laziness) while at the same time providing me a very solid support base. I am content with my overall compensation, given that I have work-life balance and especially at a time when so many people are shorn of employment opportunities, let alone one that makes one happy. I titled my review thus to explain that staying with PG has been a very conscious, deliberate choice. I have received very kind offers from clients to join their org. For about the first two years after starting in consulting I did give the offers some thought. I have not, for a very long time. And, did I say I love the people with whom I work?

Cons

It's a relatively young company so some situations call for the rules to be made (or changed) as we go along. But I feel like I have input into decision-making: the CEO is open to suggestions so long as a) you can make an logical argument b) provide data for your argument and c) be willing to act on it/prove your point. While our niche is seasoned and well-rounded professionals, I think we should look into including younger, less experienced profiles that show promise. I think we could do a better job -than the Big 5 - of finding and grooming young hopefuls.

Pros

I really enjoyed my time at the Plaster Group. The owner, Shawn Plaster, is a guy who really cares about his employees and treats them like family. Shawn and the whole management team are really approachable and open to feedback from the consultants. The compensation is great as are the benefits.

Cons

I would have liked to have more visibility to the sales pipeline, but this wasn't a huge deal.
