Pros

Working in the outdoors with plants and plant lovers. Learning about all of the flowers, trees and shrubs. First pick of the discounted distressed plants.

Cons

I loved the job until going into my third season. In orientation they have you sign a document that states if you work four hours or less YOU DON'T GET PAID. So I understand this saves them from people who do the orientation and don't come back and work. So here's what happened to me. I did the orientation and then they later decided to not use me, and I am assuming that Lowe's cut the hours seeing as they are laying off more of their employees. So I sat in a class for 3 hours and worked in the garden center for an hour in the cold rain. They were adamant that they were not going to pay me because of this. Before this in the previous season they had seemingly lost all of their lead merchandisers. Mainly because you don't really get paid much more and put up with more.

Pros

It's a job. Many in the general PP workforce are very nice people. You get to work with plants, if you like that. You get to visit a lot of 'big box store' garden centers and meet their employees. You get to be independent and drive around in your own car by yourself, if you like that (racking up lots of un-reimbursed miles--in my case about 8000--as well as some miles that are reimbursed). You get to work outdoors. There are a few employee benefits, i.e. health insurance, with employer/employee joint payments if you qualify and if you can afford them. Otherwise you will probably qualify for medicaid. You may be eligible for a 401K at very minimal level so execs can qualify to establish their better 401K program under government rules. You get to wear PP shirts and jackets. So we can count up a few benefits to working for this company.

Cons

Founders/Owners of the company are naive and oblivious though well-meaning. Perhaps the company has outgrown and expanded beyond the family's ability to manage it?? I believe they are not aware of the conditions under which their workers on the road and in the fields actually work. They do not hire qualified professional management. The PP division leadership has little experience with running this kind of service/retail company. Very poor inter-department communications. Poor management training and poor support for workers' tasks or goals. Minimal IT interface or expertise among managers and with store clients/customers. Logistics strategy and delivery of product is poorly managed by family member. Very long hours. You might wear out your car (the company doesn't reimburse mileage at IRS recommended levels). Be sure to check your paycheck to be sure they are paying the agreed salary. Watch your vacation day accruals. Long and short of it is there are a lot of negatives to working for this company but if you need work and luck out with a good supervisor you may get along well. I am sorry to be so negative and list so many grievances, but I want to give you fair warning...
