Pros

Great charming people that you will love

Cons

Extremely frustrating work environment. You are expected to do the work assigned to you and nothing more. Fall in line or get out was the experience I had while working for Phocas. It was all too common to have to constantly redo large chunks of work every several months because of technical debt which only grows. Development leadership showed a pattern of disinterest in best practices and collaborative work. Instead preferring to impulsively switch between frameworks with no discussion from the stake holders. On multiple occasions, the head of development would produce a multi-thousand line PR, riddled with bugs and hacks, and expect the team to approve it. There was absolutely no room for discussion or feedback. To make matters worse, these large PRs would consistently introduce catastrophic problems which would inevitably result in the team repeating the process again. You see the problems, you see the limitations, but you have no voice. The mess of code would be merged and then the development lead would step away to another project and leave you to pick up the pieces they just dumped all over the floor. Until things got bad enough again and the process was repeated. Attempts by my team to take ownership over the product and break this cycle were met with strong pushback from non technical management. Management has put all of its chips into the stock of a single stretched thin developer. There is no room for dissent. Do the work or get out. Because of this philosophy the most senior developers on my team resigned. Burnout, anxiety, and self doubt were common themes among my teammates. My team tripled in size with absolutely no plan for how to onboard everyone and no strong development road map. If you believe code can and should be beautiful - Phocas is not for you. The approach to code at Phocas is "make it work as fast as possible." Even when time is not of the essence - make it work as fast as possible. Tech debt is irrelevant. You will not be exposed to industry best practices. Also, if you are considering employment at Phocas you should know there is a large initiative within the company to be recognized as one of the best places to work. I think this has driven employees to fill Glassdoor with generic 5 star ratings. So take some of the more corporate sounding reviews with a grain of salt. Finally, I found the compensation extremely uncompetitive. Teammates who I spoke about compensation with felt the same. Phocas is not interested in investing in its employees - only growth in order to get more money from investors.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. While it's disappointing to hear this was your experience, we welcome and appreciate all feedback. Your team faced a number of complex technical challenges over the past year and there were some strongly-held differences of opinion. Disagreements on technical direction are inevitable and while our preference is to talk things through, leadership sometimes has to make pragmatic decisions that aren't popular with everyone. We're conscious communications around the decision making process were inconsistent and we were of course disappointed two developers subsequently chose to resign, but thus far we believe we are headed in the right direction. We totally agree your team grew too quickly and that brought challenges - one of the difficulties with a successful, rapidly growing company. We expanded our development team rapidly over the past year and we've recently hired several additional development managers to ensure we can maintain smaller teams and everyone feels supported. Salaries have to be competitive to attract and retain great people and we also offer a range of additional benefits and a stock option plan. We are absolutely committed to best practice and investing in our people: every engineer devotes a full day every two weeks to professional development. We offer internal and external professional development opportunities and educational reimbursement, and our new Head of Learning and Development is expanding the personal growth resources available to our employees. We are also strongly committed to providing a positive, collaborative culture and working environment for our employees - but employees are neither incentivised nor pressured to leave reviews on Glassdoor. Ultimately everyone's experience is different - especially when things are changing rapidly - and we are grateful you've shared yours and given us the opportunity to learn from it. Best wishes in your new role.

Pros

Good work life balance, flexible, WFH.

Cons

Nepotism and favoritism mentality in Christchurch office. If it's just a job for you and you don't have any aspirations then you will probably enjoy working here. The company values are great but it doesn't seem like they are being lived by the senior management.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. It's sad to hear you feel that way. It sounds like something may have happened recently that has concerned you. As you are currently working for us, I'd strongly encourage you to discuss those concerns with Nicki or Blair. We would love to see what we can do to find a resolution. Our culture and values are very important to us, but we know that we are not perfect and there are always areas for improvement. We appreciate all feedback.

Pros

During my employment at Phocas, I liked the work and collaboration with my immediate product team. The team has good support from each other and is working on a new product landscape. There are plenty of car parks, suitable office space, a fun office atmosphere, and a creative intention to uplift the office culture with a food cart trolley every so often.

Cons

The senior management seems to suffer from ADHD problems with frequent looking to find the "next big thing". Forming a "new task force" team from already limited human resources while expecting product teams to keep delivering new work and features and questioning why it is taking so long! Several positions were vacated with no desire to refill. From the development perspective, the head of engineering is powerless over the head of products, which means technical debts build up and gain interest without any sight of reducing them. There is a strong sense of favouritism and nepotism among a few people, often resulting in ignoring others with concerns about better processes or improvements. Some have since left the company because it no longer brings enthusiasm to work there.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review—we appreciate your detailed feedback. We’re proud of our supportive, collaborative culture and are thrilled that you experienced that within your product team. We acknowledge that things move quickly here, as we embrace a ‘fail fast’ approach to foster innovation. Spinning up new teams to explore fresh ideas is part of our strategy, and while it’s an exciting process, we understand it may not suit everyone. We also recognize the importance of addressing technical debt and improving internal tools and systems. Striking the right balance between innovation and maintenance is an ongoing challenge, and we truly value your perspective on this. Your insights will help us continue to refine our approach and improve.
