Pros

It's an absolute privilege and tough growing experience to work across cultures and countries. Working with local orgs and folks in my community taught me so much about South Africa, about my own culture/country, and provided me with some of my closest friends to this day (4 years later).

Cons

The Peace Corps (PC), like most US government organizations, does not work. Actually, I think that's intentional. The PC claims their goal is to work themselves out of a job - aka not being needed anymore. That's just PR. The US government makes choices to use the PC as a means of creating dependency. Also, several Peace Corps Volunteers I knew absolutely should have never been accepted into the program. One glaringly obvious volunteer who should have never been accepted (clear from day 1) actually caused so much trouble with locals that it became too dangerous for several other volunteers to stay in the communities they were in.
