Pros

Good set of engineers - mostly

Cons

Most unorganised restructuring of all time - tell everyone they are being made redundant and then wonder why everyone left?!

Pros

There were lots years ago, but I can’t think of any now.

Cons

Optilan: The classic bully boy syndrome. Ran by a mostly lunatic management team and backed by money hungry venture capitalists, there is no interest in developing the company, individuals, skills or training. The only thing that matters is incoming cash. There is no long term vision. You can imagine the type of people involved and their dinner time talk , “Tarquin, my bank balance has dipped a bit today, do you think the Optilan-plebs are working hard enough, shall we increase the working hours and reduce the wages even more?” The management team are afraid and comply with mandated pitifully poor decisions, even when it is not in the best interest of the company and, in some cases, illegal! Such a shame, as the many years I was there, they were mostly happy, only the last 18 months the company dropped off the edge of a cliff. There is no turning back now, all the good people, skills, knowledge and collegiate behaviour is gone. The team I worked in was 15 strong and well jelled. That was destroyed and only I was left in the team. Now, the oldest serving employee in this team is 6 months in and the team consists of just 2 people. I think Optilan must have bought bigger whips. In the last 9 months of my employment the company became extremely aggressive and mandated a permanent 25% wage reduction, in lieu of an enhanced bonus, that historically they never honoured. I wasn’t the only one to leave. In my last year I learnt that being honest doesn’t pay. Telling the truth doesn’t pay. The petty, vindictive and discriminating behaviour of the management team prevails. Even when it is clearly wrong and illegal. If dishonesty, profound incompetence and unprofessionalism, a lack of morals, ethics and pride is your thing, then Optilan is the company for you.

Pros

- Far and few between... - The team you work with makes it motivating and a fun place to work, without the staff holding it together its a fight to want to be there (well that was before they all left).

Cons

- Senior Management just riding out vesting. - Major Politics, hard to get anything done. - Clowns at the helm with 1980's style leadership. - Poor work life balance. - Expectations are perfection on a £1 budget. - Management operates on a 'discipline versus train and develop' (less the train and develop). - HR is biased and majority of the time none existent & unapproachable. - More broken relationships with suppliers than you can count. - Blame culture is imbedded. - Decisions are not met with follow ups.
