Pros

Great benefits (even better than most federal agencies - free gym, a lot of support for training and employee development, more early release and days off around holidays, most employees in finance, legal, or policy do a fair amount of international travel and get lots of comp time), friendly and competent team members, relaxed and positive work environment. High morale. Great organizational mission.

Cons

Though the organization's mission is great, OPIC is not as mission-driven as it could be, especially with regard to internal communication. The pay isn't very competitive (it is the government, after all). And like most government agencies, managers are promoted according to longevity as opposed to actual skill in management; and therefore could benefit from management training. Innovation is lacking as is individual agency (again, the government). It's a small agency so opportunities for internal advancement are extremely limited. The agency has to be reauthorized to exist every couple of years or so which makes for fairly myopic strategy. It also means employees don't enjoy the same sense of security most other federal workers have.

Pros

OPIC provides good opportunities for networking. I encourage everyone to attend brown-bag lunches and similar events. There you can learn relevant up-to-date industry information and get to know people from department you don't directly interact with. They also invite people from partner organizations like IFC to exchange latest news and achievements. Supervisors are usually supportive of your needs if you vocalize your interests and request more assignments. OPIC is one the best state agencies to work at and retire from.

Cons

The pace of working was too relaxed for me. A lot of my senior (both in terms of positions and age) were very behind technological progress. And I'm talking about simple things like basic knowledge of Excel and ability to print the way you want. Sometimes I had a feeling that people working there were bored with their work, but didn't want to make a little effort to make it more fun.

Pros

The location is central. OPIC is outside of Metro Center and close to many restaurants.

Cons

BEWARE! The organization is as toxic as they come, and management is the source of the unnecessary drama. If you are a capable, fair, honest, and competent, this is not the organization for you.
