Designer's Perspective

Pros

A decent part time job for a student. Doesn't require too much of your time outside of classes and is flexible to your class schedule. Worked with other students(developers) and was usually a easy going work environment. Also a good way to work on craft using programs, such as the Adobe Creative Suite, outside of classes.

Cons

Lacking creativity. No one I worked with had a good grasp on the importance of design or the work that goes into it. Developing is definitely more of the focus, with design an after thought. Cookie cutter layouts for clients with little to no creative input on each project. Never met with clients or got a chance to talk with them on what they were looking for. I was just always given an assignment each day to create icons or buttons for their designs, not involved with the design much at all. In my experience, management never understood the creative process and didn't value attention to detail. I was always told to just get it done as quick as you can, and if it looks bad, it will be fixed later. The quote I always remember is, "We aren't making the Mona Lisa here." If you are looking for a design job to explore your creativity and get some valued experience in the graphic design field, this isn't the place to do it.

Pros

Unbelievable opportunity for someone early in their career or who's a student. The clients that they work with are very high profile and it's rare that you find an opportunity where you can build your resume with a portfolio of such clients. Since it's a new company you are able to dip your feet into many different areas of the company so if you take a position with marketing you could also learn about developement, design, web design, managing, human resources, and several other areas. Lastly, the culture there is very positive and the team really looks out for one another and does all they can to help you when you need help. When I first started I had no idea what went into building apps but within a month or so I felt pretty up to speed because of everyone's help. The people I met at OCV were mostly great people and had a real passion for technology. Of course there are always your bad apples but most of the time they weeded themselves out naturally by either poor attitude or lack of maturity.

Cons

There were few downsides for me personally. When I came to OCV I had just left a job I hated with a company in Birmingham. My previous job was brutal with 3am wake up calls, poor top management, and low pay for the work. Eric brought me in and gave me an opportunity here with OCV apps and took a chance on me. I've learned more in the past year and 8 months than I ever could've imagined and it's put me in a great spot for my career. I have nothing but gratitude for Eric and the OCV team.

Pros

Great work environment with very nice management. Management is very focused on growth and new opportunities and is not afraid to try out new things. This makes for a very interesting and engaging work environment.

Cons

With a smaller startup company, it is sometimes harder to have a detailed process and always hold to it. This company is no exception. Sometimes growth and looking forward gets in the way of making viable products in real time.
