Great team but lost respect for CEO

Pros

Good pay, plenty of new technology to work with, and a team that works well together.

Cons

Recently the CEO made it very clear he has no empathy for his employees as he announced return to office. Last fall he held a town meeting and said we will work where we want as long as we stay productive. He advised that’s what sets OCLC apart from places like Google and Chase. Last month he did a complete 180 and held two meetings that basically told his employees that if we are not happy about returning it’s our problem and we can move on if we don’t like it. We are more than capable of being highly productive from home versus sitting in a sea of cubicles and wasting time commuting daily.

Great mission. Lacking leadership.

Pros

We truly have a good mission. Its what keeps me here. Many people here have the same feeling. We all love what libraries do for communities and mankind.

Cons

I love the mission, but something’s rotten at here. The CEO of this non-profit makes almost $2 million a year. The rest of the EMT makes almost $500k.. It makes no sense when we aren’t growing market share or releasing significant new products. The executive leadership is embarrassing . The CFO has lost four managers in the past 6 months and he’s a micromanaging tyrant bully. Doesn’t trust anyone and everyone avoids him. The ivy league MBA CIO has done nothing. He can’t keep the systems running and four of his executive directors have left in the past year. He can’t deliver a project that isn’t millions over budget and years late. He’s also the head of the DEI initiative. A middle aged white male. Nice. He’s so interested in DEI, his last three Executive Director hires were, get this, middle aged white males. And the five star reviews on here are all written by the HR department. As soon as a negative one comes out, the click farms spin up and they write a bunch of positive reviews. Skippy can’t have his precious ego bruised. Truly authentic and transparent. Not quite. I’m sorry library community, you deserve better. We're here for you not the lackluster management.

Pros

Nice people. Cafeteria was cheap. Compared to other places, low stress tech environment. Benefits and time off ok

Cons

Oclc needs to figure out if it's an academic institution or a software company. In an academic institution you can get away with paying less , having outdated technology, etc. But you get people, who might know library science but aren't as knowledgeable in tech. So your tech will be behind. But then you should have all this library tech innovation and research. Which has decreased a lot. If you're a software company, tech people need to be at the table and informed about products promised. And paid appropriately. Accountability needs to exist. You can't let people who been there 30 years dictate direction just because they've been there 30 years. Technology is old. On top of old stuff is just a new wrapper. New technology is viewed with suspicion even though it's at least 5 years behind elsewhere. Going back to the office because you spent a lot of money on open concept EVERYONE hates besides the CEO? That won't keep people for long. CEO gets an office while promoting open office concept that's loud and spreads diseases easily is pretty tonedeaf. Maybe someone should challenge Skip to work on the 4th floor for a few months?
