Surprisingly Poor Leadership

Pros

Great people, mission, campus, location.

Bad senior leadership. Worst management I've witnessed in 20+ years at NREL. Top management is brilliant yet clueless. After a year, it's obvious that management does not care about employees. Director fosters a division between research and non-research staff (even program-funded staff like analysts and project managers) and refers to them as “carpet” vs. “tile” people (office vs. lab). He pushed aside female leaders to make room for male friends from his previous job and even invites only select male managers to extracurricular activities. To fund the director's pet projects, he cuts overhead expenses like early lab closures for holidays and treacherous weather. Another top manager says “dedicated employees will come to work regardless of the weather” regardless of the fact that teleconferencing and videoconferencing technology makes in-person presence unnecessary. Are we living in the 1970s??? Despite claiming NREL to be a model of sustainability, management can't get past this antiquated mindset. Incompetent and archaic HR leadership does not help, as it's sole mission is to avoid litigation. Meanwhile, non-existent management training and support fosters an environment of ill-prepared and ineffective middle management.

Pros

If you have great ideas for R&D, there are a number of ways to capture funding. This is with the caveat that your research has to align with DOE and NREL goals.

Cons

NREL is also a place where, for many people, where careers go to die: 1) Few opportunities for advancement 2) The office politics are ridiculous, especially when funding gets tight. I've never met a more insecure group of people then when dealing with scientists and engineers. 3) If you make a mistake, then forget about advancing your career. 4) NREL will pay for you to get a graduate degree, but don't expect a salary boost. I know managers that have told people that a degree earned while at NREL is worth less than if you had it at the time you were hired. Bottom line -- If you are in R&D, position yourself to become a line manager or a task leader. If you miss, then your career will stall.

top-heavy and "it's who you know" culture

Pros

competitive pay and benefits. Several "silos" actually have good managers

Cons

If you enter NREL with a goal of making a difference, you're going to be in for a disappointment. While the place employs top-notch scientists, its matrixed structure and extreme aversion to any change will soon dishearten you. The organization is very top-heavy. Nepotism and cronyism flourish. The operations side (Finance, Site Ops) is poorly run, and actually prefers to distance itself from "the tile" people. It's who you know, not what you know. Shrinking funding leads to "diversifying funding base", which is a euphemism for having to look for your own funding instead of doing the job you were hired to do.
