Pros

Miami offers terrific work/life balance on a beautiful campus. Facilities are well maintained with many new, or recently renovated, buildings. Oxford is a cozy college town. Benefits, despite recent cuts, are outstanding (maybe too much so in this day and age). If you are so inclined you can do very little day-day and collect a paycheck.

Cons

Having worked in both academic and administrative positions, there is little accountability placed on employees. It is not uncommon to find academic employees who spend little time on campus. The inability to reward the best/brightest/most active researchers, scholars, and teachers has led many to only aspire to meet "par" instead of rising to new challenges. Academically, it is disappointing to see so many faculty not reach their potential simply because past cases have shown there to be few benefits for putting in the time/work required to do so. This has led to a decline in academic standards which will continue until greater accountability is enforced/rewarded. Leadership is largely ineffective and has contributed to a culture of wasteful spending, decreasing academic demands, and the above mentioned lack of accountability. Administratively, politics often get in the way of rational decision-making. Who is making the argument is more important than what the argument is about. It is frustrating that so few ideas are ever considered on this campus. Ideas are ignored unless they echo the views held by leadership. Poor communication between groups has led to a campus of fiefdoms with academics and administrators fighting for individual gains instead of what is best for Miami.

Pros

Generally on your own and able to create your own lesson plans.

Cons

*Incredibly low pay for a professional teaching position - less than a McDonald's manager. Visiting positions are paid the same regardless of experience or expertise. ($32,000 for Visiting Instructors and $43,000 for visiting asst. professors annually in 2017 - NOT what Glassdoor says) *Isolated location surrounded by farms and stuck in a pizza. burger college town (doesn't even have a movie theater) every restaurant is filled with students, other options are 30-40 minutes away *University has a huge budget for entertaining the students (events, sports, free meals, etc...) but keeps salaries low. They are proud that they are 'lean' - but the staff and faculty are paying for it with a low quality of life. *The students are generally from upper middle-class families and tend to expect special treatment and spoon-feeding. Entitled and quick to complain if anything doesn't favor them. *No training for safety / intruders, most training focused on anything the college could be held liable for. * Some departments have very few long term, full-time positions and just keep Visiting staff on the hook with promises that there 'could be' permanent positions in the future. After 5 years, they 'let you go', no matter how much you have contributed.

Pros

This place provides you with a stable job with a stable income. They have relatively good benefits compare to the corporate world.

Cons

This place does not invest in their employees much, and it does not provide with any career path. Most employees stay at their same job for 20+ years, which makes it difficult to advance in your career. HR department is also very incompetent in creating a good work culture. Very political, and always have to jump through hoops after hoops to get things done.
