Unhinged CEO

Pros

Good benefits and ok pay

Cons

CEO bragged publicly about 'dumping on plebs' on Twitter. Lots of Messari employees were affected by the prevalent criminality in crypto - savings hacked and laundered, rug pulled, or funds lost in FTX/Celsius etc. Then laid off in a recession and implosion of the industry. Imagine being a worker thinking you're contributing to expand financial inclusion to the disenfranchised and getting punched in the gut when your savings get hacked and your CEO is bragging on Twitter about "dumping" on the working class. Yikes. There are many workers in crypto who feel this way and it's really sad. There's no words for it and truly no other industry in the world that screws over their own or those it pretends to help this bad. Better to not get involved in this "industry" if we can even call it that. If you want to build a 'real' career... this isn't it. Time to eat a bit of humble pie... this is not a legitimate, professional industry and frankly it doesn't deserve 'mass adoption.' It would be best for society if were regulators were to shut the industry down as they are thankfully.

A Disheartening Experience at Messari

Pros

Messari has good benefits and is competitive with salaries.

Cons

First and foremost, the company culture at Messari was nothing short of toxic. There seemed to be a disconnect between the management and the employees, leading to a lack of trust and mutual respect. Constructive criticism was rarely welcomed, and attempts to voice concerns or offer suggestions were met with defensiveness and dismissive attitudes from higher-ups. This created a suffocating atmosphere where creativity and growth were stifled. Another significant issue was the lack of transparency in decision-making processes. Important company updates were often withheld, and crucial information was not disseminated effectively. This lack of communication left employees feeling disconnected from the company's vision and goals, making it difficult to align individual efforts with the broader objectives.

Pros

The caliber of talent at Messari is truly top-notch. Regardless of position or department, literally, everyone is smart, driven, passionate about the mission, and just downright interesting. Messari is a place that does remote work right. We're able to maintain a strong company culture without a manufactured "drinking the kool-aid vibe" inherent with other organizations with "strong" culture. I really look forward to every randomly assigned coffee chat meeting I have. There are always new and interesting problems to solve. There's so much opportunity to build systems and structures from the ground up. It's nearly impossible to be bored. Also, we're huge on learning and personal development. Everyone gets a learning stipend every year to spend on whatever development opportunity they want, and there is always truly interesting lunch and learns. Even though it's a bear market, our leadership has been good stewards of our funds. We are well-capitalized, and we are continuing to build.

Cons

Not really a con per se, but we're a start-up, this is a startup, and you're expected to do the work. This is not the place to "rest and vest". That's not to say leadership encourages or even endorses hustle culture (no credit for shuffling papers), but the expectation is that you're putting 50hrs of work a week minimum. That being said, when those hours of work happen are very flexible. I work out and walk my dog in the middle of the day all the time, I just put in extra work before or after. We also have unlimited PTO, and as long as you put in requests reasonably in advance, there's no stigma in taking it. Also not necessarily a con but if you require rigid structure or hand holding, this is not the place for you. It's a startup and things can be chaotic.
