Excellent company

Pros

Maxxam was a great place to work. There was a lot of opportunity, and the people are great. They do a lot of extras for the employees too - freezies on hot days, company swag, bagel days, training with snacks/lunch, and more.

Cons

I think in most places, people wished they were paid more. But these guys have great benefits that is actually worth quite a lot and is flexible. RRSP matching, and health care accounts are a great added value.

Low wage, toxic, burn-out inducing environment

Pros

They have employee benefits and employer DPSP match to your RRSP contributions.

Cons

You will be paid just above minimum wage. If you think that you will make more than $20/hr here, forget about it. Even though they have DPSP match to your RRSP, you most likely will not have enough money to retire comfortably because you will not be able to afford to contribute enough to your RRSP based on your pay. I worked here for more than five years, held multiple positions and still was not rewarded for my diversity and adaptability. For the amount of investment spent on university education to be hired by this company is definitely not worth it. This place breathes toxicity, from the chemicals and unknown samples you inhale on a daily basis, to the management who produce their own. Management treats you like garbage. You are not a human being in their eyes, but rather a means to an end for their own work. You are expected to work a lot of overtime and take on additional tasks, that were not in your original job description, for no compensation at all. You will work so hard until you start to experience burn-out. There are no real career changing opportunities at this company. The opportunities they offer cannot take you very far.

Gross Underappreciation And Disrespect Of Workforce

Pros

The employees. Management has an incredible ability to pick out hard-working, kind-hearted, loyal people who give their all. It's unfortunate that they treat these amazing employees like garbage.

Cons

People are treated as a means to an end. People are expected to work obscene hours of overtime (+50hr weeks) due to understaffing that management refuses to address. Rather than hiring on competent workers full time to ensure adequate training, seasonal staff are brought in at the last min to save as much money as possible, leaving existing staff to keep up with previous work levels (at the busiest times of the year) while also trying to train people on a ludicrously inefficient system. Rather than taking the ideas and experience of longtime staff into account, radical changes are made to procedure by out of province/country bureaucrats who have had no real world experience with the day to day work flow. Several staff have had to take stress leave due to inadequate training, overlarge workloads and lack support in high-stress positions. Pay freezes on already industry low pay grades lasting upwards of 3 years.
