Pros

You are your own boss. You set your schedule and time management. If you are willing to put in the time, you will be ok. Just follow Matco's business plan to the letter.

Cons

Routes make zero sense. A constant fight with management to make route correct that was messed up on original survey. National Manager was a dud.. never saw the guy. Never once made an impact to the franchise group I was with. Collecting $ from dead beat broke mechanics will kill more time than you can imagine. Matco will NOT help you collect.

Pros

Health benefits, 401K and pay if you hit bonuses.

Cons

Where to start. Field management team is an absolute wreck. Please be careful and do your research if you are thinking about a DM opportunity with this company. This is a good ole boy network of individuals who are not open to new ideas. It's their way or the highway. Due to poor performance in concerns to selling additional franchises and franchisee failure rate over the past 3-4 years, there is a large initiative to do what ever it takes to slice up routes and to sell additional franchises at whatever cost. Besides this initiative, you will be working hand in hand, 80 hours a week and weekends with your distributors to keep them in business. This is not a rant or to bash the company this is the truth. This is definitely not a job you want if you want to sleep at night or to grow your professional career. Be careful, you were warned.

Pros

You are your own boss. Meet lots of new people. Can be a really fun job.

Cons

Pretty much everything else. They are in your corner till you have a hiccup. Come up short on one weekly tool bill payment and you are done. District Managers are basically salesmen pretending to be in your corner when you are new and encourage you to buy buy buy. Their cost on tools is ridiculous. I bought streamlights at a local napa for 15 dollars cheaper than what I would. Pay cost on. Most of the starter inventory is discontinued or very soon to be discontinued. So if you dont survive a year like I did, you are stuck with a 150k bill and 20k worth of tools that you cant return to them. Oakleys are the same. I have $1000 worth of oakleys they sent me in the starter inventory, and they cant be returned. The stuff you can return, they will short you on. I sent 20k back, got an 11k refund. Scam artists. I lost 200k in a year. Borrowed money against my home to stay afloat, paid them up and got my bill current. A week later they terminated my franchise agreement. They tell you if you cant succeed in 3 months, they reimburse your money invested. The problem is, the first 3 months everyone is in a buying frenzy as you are new and its exciting. After 7 months things slow down. Save your money and run as far away from these guys as you can.

Working at Matco Tools (employee - NOT a Distributor)

Pros

Most of the employees are good team players.

Cons

The top managers are completely disconnected with the rest of the company. The regularly held (and mandatory) company meetings are mostly used to make themselves look good. They have an excuse ready for any missed goal. When I asked my direct manager about the upcoming projects I typically got a 'I don't know; I don't have any idea or I am just a soldier not a general' answer. Because there is no VISION there is a general lack of motivation from most workers. This place is only safe for junior people or those who have been with the company for ages. Even with a great resume, if you are middle-aged, look somewhere else. They will spend millions on outside resources but will get rid of you without even checking your skills to save money.

Pros

A good service area with a good District Manager can be very rewarding.

Cons

Although advertised as low, the start up costs for Matco Tools can be high, and not always an investment. Overpriced tools. Competing with on-line resellers.

Pros

Had previously worked for the competition in a similar role, Matco had better worklife balance, and an overall better compensation package. Mike Swanson in the main office was always a great resource for getting the correct answers, and teaching you how to find it. Excellent support from most in the main office, and everyone was highly accessible.

Cons

Had multiple Regional Managers in my time there, and one was great, the other I always felt was only interested in his agenda and moving on to his next call. Marketing Department made a lot of missteps and field management seemed to have little information as to how to respond.

Could be a great company to work for

Pros

Some managers are amazing to work for. Matco offers great health benefits.

Cons

The departments do not get along. People are not held accountable for their mistakes. There are several managers who do not treat their people equally. Many people only get good treatment from their manager when they are still considered "new". Once you have been in the department over a year you are no longer treated nicely. The cheaper way out is always the result. Instead of filling a position they just pile the work onto someone else. HR doesn't do anything about managers who bully their people, no matter how many people come to them. Just suck it up or quit are the only options. Only get recognized for a mistake vs. positive recognition if you are new.
