Pros

Many of the mid- and entry-level staff are intelligent and talented.

Cons

The managing directors have incredibly poor communication skills. During my time at Marathon, I often witnessed the managing directors give contradictory or unclear instructions, or change their minds after time-intensive assignments had been completed, which created an incredibly counterproductive work environment. When this occurred, the managing directors would often publicly shame employees, regardless of whose fault the miscommunication was. Because of this, most of the staff was miserable, and the turnover rate was unbelievably high. Unless you have no other prospects, I would strongly recommend against taking a job at Marathon

Pros

There are opportunities to devise innovative client strategies, write for top-tier outlets and work with respected reporters. Career development is possible if employees are persistent.

Cons

Management is fundamentally atrocious. Changes to improve the company have been in name only, with management retaining its impossibly demanding expectations leading to immediate employee burnout. Turnover is generally over 60%, so the company and clients are always in flux. The volatile behavior of management makes work miserable, and bonding between employees is generally limited to this shared misery. It says something that whenever an employee leaves, which is frequently, it generally means celebrating that employees escape. Employees who have been there longer try to rationalize staying and management's behavior, saying that it is the norm in New York, but it is truly not. Do not work here if you want any semblance of a work-life balance, a relationship of mutual respect with management, or for work to be something fulfilling and happy in your life. A fundamental shift at the highest level of management is necessary. (Note there would likely be more negative reviews here if employees weren't afraid of management)
