Pros

Great community of over 160 people to share knowledge and project experience, but only if you take the time to take advantage of it. New open office. Great perks - The adjacent office park has a free gym for employees and there's another local gym at a discount. Monthly chair massages by professionals. Fresh fruit is put out a few times a week. Vendors come at least twice a week - for a 10 at 10 on Tuesday, and Wine and Cheese Thursday evenings. Staff puts on fun events- beer night, waffle-off, weekly yoga sessions (licensed instructor on staff), craft/skill share. There's a bike committee (indoor bike parking), ARE/AxP/IDP/path to licensure committee, and multiple ways to get involved within the community.

Cons

Work-life balance can be tough with high volume of work, high turnover, and the firm seems to be chronically understaffed. Workload is not evenly distributed amongst all levels of the team. Burn-out and stress levels ebb and flow but can be pretty bad amongst the mid level and higher management. Retail work can be monotonous and high-demand bleeding into evenings and weekends. Some studios have a lack of training - more of a learn as you go, slip and fall and fail with a client, and retail clients have noticed the high turnover of staff and constant retraining of new staff.

Pros

There is a difference between a job and a career. This company is a no better than a minimum wage job, but design experience helped me talk a good game into a much better paying job.

Cons

Toxic work culture with Power Tripping Principal Architects, mandatory overtime and overworked peers. Zero Work Life Balance and lack of empathy from upper management/principals. Pay is perhaps the lowest in the area for a company of this size, yet the company has failed to hire and train additional headcount for successful completion of projects.

Pros

some cool coworkers, insurance, snacks, monthly massages, activities, new office.

Cons

It depends on what team you are on and what leaders you work with- some teams are good and you can learn and grow in, not all. Cons here: low pay, big box uncreative projects, low retention, most political firm I have ever been at. They hire waves of designers, and let go of them just as quickly (not just designers- nobody is safe). There is little actual regard to employee retention when they churn employees over so quickly. They are definition of "cad monkeys". I did not necessarily see a correlation between hard work and reward. Despite claims they use a fair peer review system, the "fair" reviews are more for show. This is the most political firm I have been at, where hard work is often trumped by strategic alliances and smack talking. You don't move up unless you are "ready", a term that is nebulous and different for everyone. Instead of productivity, time was spent holding meetings about team members' feelings, and leaders referred to designers as "toxic". This is not only unprofessional, but the complete antithesis to team building, and it was a very toxic witch hunt atmosphere underlying a happy family veneer. They have a lot of activities for showing what a great place they are, but I would caution designers to be aware of these strategies and Always look out for Yourself first. If possible, go somewhere else where you will be respected and paid more. If not, learn what you need to learn and leave. With this place, one day you're liked, the next you're cut.
