Pros

- Compelling finance offering for a specific type of tech company - Catered lunch on Mondays, happy hours on Fridays - Decent benefits (bus pass, on-site gym, good location, healthcare)

Cons

- The company does not value it's employees. Managers throw employees under the bus on a daily basis and are stubborn in their opinions. I’ve seen some talented people fired simply for voicing an opinion and many more who felt stuck in their job, with no path to promotion despite good results. - Management has a hard time being transparent and tries to paint everything (company finances, goals, fundraising status, company metrics, staff turnover, etc.) in a better light. If there’s an issue, they’d rather sweep it under the rug or cover it up with a fake story than deal with it. - Frugal when it comes to employee development but carelessly throws out cash when it comes to marketing - Performance reviews only happen when someone is one mistake short of getting fired - The company is 30 people but has the hierarchy of a much bigger organization. - Promotions and recognition come from favoritism and playing office politics, not from hard work and results. - Everyone is considered disposable

Lighter Capital Response
7y
In all fairness, Lighter Capital is a startup and one year after this review the company's culture is vastly different to the impression made by this review. Lighter Capital is now 70+ people and quality and care invested in people is night and day different to this review. Lighter Capital continues to mature rapidly and we would encourage and invite people considering working here to consider the other reviews. During your interview you will have AMPLE access to current employees and plenty of opportunities to ask candid questions about the current culture. ❤️

Work/Life Balance

Pros

Lighter Capital has been an amazing career move for me. Upper management cares about their employees, and the work from home perk is my favorite. My bosses schedule 1:1 time each week just to make sure I am doing well and to answer any questions I have. I can always IM or zoom them whenever for anything which is great. You might be on a different time zone with people, but everyone respects when it is your evening/time off. A few management team members live in Australia, but they wake up super early to make sure they can talk to you during your “normal” work hours- it’s not necessarily a perk but it shows the character and respect they have for employees work/life balance. The vacation and paid for health insurance is also one of the greatest perks of working at Lighter.

Cons

N/A so far! I haven’t been at Lighter for long, but I do not see anything changing my opinion in the future.

Pros

Professional team, with great people culture. Lots of autonomy and opportunity to learn new things. Not much middle management so there's room to make an impact as an individual contributor. Distributed workforce with occasional in person events. Not meeting heavy. Experienced C Suite and many long term ICs. You'll be working with people who know their stuff, and you can trust they will get their job done. In my time with Lighter, I watched it grow from less than ten people to fifty plus and mature into becoming the leading RBF firm in the country. I'm incredibly proud of the work we did and the work they are continuing to do. The team is smart, dedicated, and they really care about the work that they do.

Cons

Small teams mean you wear a lot of hats. No clear career paths to speak of. Distributed team and meeting light culture mean sometimes communication is tricky.
