Pros

Fantastic people, truly committed and brilliant. I worked with more geniuses at Itron than anywhere else. Fascinating domain, and the work is valuable to the world. Excellent pay and benefits, but you work yourself to death for them.

Cons

Itron is a hardware company which has been trying to “pivot” to software for years. The pivot keeps turning into a pirouette. They can’t seem to figure software out. They ask far too much of far too few. The heroes on the front lines have pulled off so many “moonshot” miracles that management thinks that’s normal, anyone can do it, and they can offshore all the development. This has had the usual results, even with good offshore developers. The heroes are all overworked, can’t sleep, and are leaving in droves. The customers are starting to figure it out, and the software engineers are dropping like flies. For a $2 billion company, it’s still operating at the capability maturity level of 1, where individual effort makes or breaks the company.

Pros

Truly cutting-edge technology stack at the forefront of IoT / Smart Grid and mesh networking. Good market positioning and some very impressive engineering talent "where the rubber meets the road".

Cons

Executive management is badly out of touch with rank-and-file employees, because they don't solicit or welcome their input. On the rare occasions the visit remote sites from Liberty Lake, they spend nearly all their time talking to managers. Since many directors are offsite from their direct reports, a culture of nonaccountability has resulted. There is no meaningful oversight of those first-line managers, and that lack of checks and balances has allowed some highly unethical and counterproductive behavior to persist indefinitely. HR is worthless at best, and an active participant in abusive practices as worst. Ordinary employees are required to undergo training on the company's Code of Conduct each year and sign an ethics pledge, but managers appear to be exempt from both the training itself and immune from any consequences for gross violations of it. Meanwhile, executives are steadily outsourcing everything they can to low-labor-cost economies (India, Hungary, etc) while the technical staff is compelled to train the people they know will ultimately replace them. What a morale crusher that is!

Toxic workplace climate

Pros

Some good technologies and some excellent engineers; good collaboration opportunities.

Cons

Corporate culture has gone toxic; even the worst managers (and there are quite a few) are axiomatically right. Very us-vs-them climate; corruption is a serious problem (favoritism, whistleblower retaliation, etc) as is dishonest and underhanded behavior on the part of HR. Meanwhile, the company is busily outsourcing everything it can to low-labor-cost economies and hoping no one notices or, failing that, understands what it means for the company's future. Executives are completely disconnected from reality, NEVER talk to non-managers outside of obviously choreographed dog-and-pony shows a couple of times per year, and seem to have no interest at all beyond quarterly stock performance and how that impacts their own compensation packages.
