Pros

Great benefits, barista on staff & gorgeous views. Below the upper management level, the people who work here are generally nice and easy to work with.

Cons

If you ever wondered what it was like to have a amnesiac lead your creative department, send Innocean your book. Eric Springer is the the creative equivalent of a cat chasing a laser pointer across the floor. Ideas that were valid at 10am are sitting on the discard pile by 4pm. Want an explanation? Too bad. Eric didn't know why he liked it in the first place, so there's no way for him to tell you why it is now invalid. Want clarification on what the creative vision is for any given assignment? Good luck. Pull back the curtain and there's nothing there. Eric's idea of inspiring his employees is recalling his five favorite campaigns from the eighties and nineties and telling you why they worked. I'm pretty sure that's about the time he stopped forming new memories. Want to walk into an edit bay and have the CCO who's reviewed a project every step of the way act like he's seeing the entire concept for the first time? Again, send Innocean your book. You wouldn't believe me if I told you how often this actually happens. On the plus side, my fake laugh has gotten really good over the past year. Did I mentioned that Eric is also incredibly thin-skinned and tries to fire anyone who voices any criticism (constructive or otherwise) on his creative decisions?

(This) Culture = Disaster

Pros

Our “C-Suite” is blind, and its under-qualified, over-paid cronies are blind too. It’s convenient to manage an agency with impaired vision, easier to ignore the real issues. This blindness causes the “fearless leaders” to try and sell the rest of the company a culture and vision that is a farce. The occasional party is nice, but merely used as a band-aid to what is really happening. The leadership mess is a shame, because there are some really good, passionate and hardworking people at Innocean.

Cons

Culture + Awards = Growth. WHAT? This culture = disaster is more like it. This agency measures itself by a number of awards they (think) they will miraculously rack up, versus producing the kind of work that will benefit the client. Leadership actually believes the awards, (instead of noteworthy client success) equals growth. The days of racking up awards walked out the door about two years ago, and so did great ideas. In fact, great ideas have an early death at Innocean, and most never see the light of day, as does our passion when we enter this industry and find ourselves working here. Client focus isn’t just lost, it barely exists. Poor, feckless leadership keeps morale low, employees are overworked and disenfranchised, and benefits continue to decrease. We are trailing edge, no leaders in this space. And just when we think “new” is about to become “now”, we get a new highly touted head of strategy, who spends so much time talking about her accomplishments no one has ever heard of, that she can’t possibly have time to bring her many promises to life and help us “Discover Beyond” (her ego). Catch-up Innocean! Or maybe not, because catching-up won’t make us a company of futurists! It will just give us parity! Maybe. For the poor souls who stick around.

Come for the benefits. Stay for the drama.

Pros

Pay (have been looking for a new job for a year but can't afford the paycut), lunchtime surfing, free cafe that will soon rival Starbucks (hint, hint Admin), lunatic client owns agency (we're not getting fired anytime soon. BOOM!), free drama rivaled only by the Real Housewives franchise.

Cons

There aren't any cons really . . . . unless you don't like misogyny, sexual harassment or hostile work environments. If you don't get your rocks off on being sexually harassed, bullied or retaliated against, you will struggle here. Better to give in to the control of the exclusive executive boys club and focus deeply on the ocean views while sipping a free mocha frappa-latte. When it all starts to get to you (and it will), breathe in the salty ocean air and focus. Breathe in free medical, dental and vision benefits and breathe out an executive conspiracy to protect a known harasser. Breathe in free coffee and snacks and breathe out knowing those men did nothing to address complaints of harassment until they became news. Breathe in 401K company match and breathe out ALL the women who have been harassed, bullied and intimidated by the Chief Creep Officer. Breathe in your convenient commute and breathe out knowing leadership will never prioritize the safety of women over the comfort of their positions. Breathe in the free beer at happy hour and breath out the announcement that the 3% certification would be a "big change" solution to harassment in the agency -- and not the firing of the Chief Creep Officer. Breathe in, breathe out this is where we work.
