Pros

Amazing benefits, consistent hours for office workers (unless you are required to Snow Plow in the winter), great team members in non-executive positions.

Cons

It is the policy in district offices that many office workers must plow snow on an emergency basis in the winter. Instead of paying the highway maintenance workers more to gain more drivers, they force office workers to plow. This is a dangerous policy, because office workers only drive in the worst storms and have the least amount of experience. They then are reprimanded for doing things wrong under the pretext that they were "trained" and "have the opportunity to practice driving when the weather is good." The problem is not that these drivers cannot drive the trucks, but that they are only out in the worst of snow storms. Office workers are generally not the type of people you want driving large machinery in dangerous conditions. You want people with "street smarts" to do those jobs, not the people with "book smarts." It is such a dangerous policy, and needs to be changed. Office workers should not be forced to plow snow. Executive bureaucracy is awful; it is nearly impossible to get anything done unless you are an executive.

Better Work/Life Balance

Pros

Good work/life balance. Work week is 37.5 hours, no overtime required. Employees get 12 holidays a year, 12 vacation days, 3 personal days, and 9 sick days. Current remote work policy is 2 days a week. People are generally nice. Usually can leave it all at work. Opportunities for advacement

Cons

The manager to employee ratio is very high. Way too many levels of management. There is also some bureaucracy that makes it hard to get things done. The agency also gets involved in lots of trends that tend to get dropped after a year (Innovation, Diversity and Inclusion).

Professional but relaxed atmosphere; good people who care

Pros

Professional but relaxed atmosphere. Best Agency in the State of Indiana to work for. Caring co-workers; Concerned with quality work in addition to quantity but not at the expense of quality. Family atmosphere. Feels like one large team, no matter where in the state you are located. I miss INDOT and should never have left.

Cons

Some long term employees (with 15 or more years of service) feel a sense of entitlement to being promoted, regardless of their work ethic. Not all long term employees feel this way, but those that do tend to be negative and disgruntled, and often state their dissatisfaction openly. But overall, INDOT folks are great to work with.
