Worst Experience of my Life

Pros

The everyday employees I worked with were great people, but the majority of them are gone now, and the ones left are currently searching for work elsewhere.

Cons

During my time there I was sexually harassed by upper management, and witnessed many others experience the same. HR did nothing to stand up for the dozens of women who reported sexual harassment. This is due to the fact that they don’t have HR except for one person who works on the east coast and no one has met. I found a new job and quit, and it’s a good thing because they ended up laying off half of the company. They used the coronavirus as an excuse, although they had it planned for quite awhile and used the pandemic as the excuse. The CEO calls his employees his family. However, when it came time to downsize the company, he didn’t even have the courtesy to tell his “family members” face to face that he was letting them go. He had the unknown east coast HR lady call them. There are no middle of the road salaries. People are either extremely overpaid an exuberant amount of money (upper management and one editor), or severely underpaid with no benefits (everyone else). Many employees were more often than not expected to work overtime (past midnight) WITHOUT overtime pay. There’s no sick days. Sick days and PTO are the same thing, and there’s not many of them. Especially when they deduct time for going to the doctor, in half hour increments. While I was there, the turn around of employees was very high. I had never witnessed so many assistant editors and graphics designers come and go in my life - multiple staying for only 1-2 weeks. The office manager does nothing at all, so don’t go to her for any help. She knows nothing and won’t be able to help you. The COO is a male chauvinist, demeaning, bully. It’s shocking that he’s still there, even though the CEO fired him for sexual harassment 2 months ago, and now decided to keep him (when they laid off most of the women who complained). The CFO is scary and verbally abusive to his team. The CEO runs everything based off of money and emotion. He yells at his assistants and assistant editors. He is also very forgetful due to his age, and will angrily take it out on others when he forgets things. He allows the clients to bully his editors and producers, and doesn’t stand up for his employees. To the current clients: I feel bad for you!! You are paying money to keep this company afloat, without realizing that you‘re supporting such a hostile work environment. To the prospective employees: stay away!! Due to the small size of the company now, the impending fall out from of the sexual harassment investigation, and the age of the CEO - this company won’t exist much longer, or it will be sold and you’ll be out of a job.

Underpaid and Overworked

Pros

The views from the building are great.

Cons

There were a lot of people here who've stuck by the CEO for 8+ years, and they've turned a blind eye to the way the COO and CEO respect the lesser employees. They take kids fresh out of college, pay them a little minimum wage, work them ridiculous hours, and expect them to stay after hours unpaid if they want to be promoted within. It's a bleak and unmotivational working environment, the HR department is not there to help you, but help the company. We had to fight for simple craft services, and we were chastised for not going to company events on the weekends (our personal time). The turnaround rate for employees here is astounding, and if you work here you'll see why.

Pros

Some really good people below the line in the company.

Cons

A complete nest of vipers as far as upper management. They will choke you for every penny you have. CEO is extremely cheap and used tactics of intimidation against employees. I heard they recently fired the CFO in attempt to cut out the cancer. In my opinion, this tumor has metastasized in all levels of upper management.
