Pros

Benefits are above standard for a government contract company, decent time off, training stipend, and other electable options.

Cons

Complete unwillingness to discuss salary range or pay in general. It seems to be taboo subject, do you homework on the position if you want to be able to negotiate at all.

Pros

I worked with some very smart people, learned a lot about telecom technologies old and new

Cons

Money regularly went missing from the 401k, promised reviews and raises and vacation increases never happened. Non-compete form where you would be fined $100,000 if you wanted to work at another tech company within 5 years was sent to existing employees (they all refused to sign). They knew the biggest gov't contract would not be renewed but kept this a secret for a year, then on the Wednesday of the last week of the contract they laid off almost half the company with no warning, no severance pay, at the height of the great recession. Interview: I was told there would be a review after 6 months (there wasn't) and I would get 1 week more vacation after 1 year (I didn't, in fact he claimed I had 1 week less than what I was offered). Later learned all new employees are given those same empty promises. Was told I had to start immediately (no 2 week notice to my last job) as it was an emergency, otherwise they would hire someone else (there was no emergency, there was no one else). They were an hour+ late to my interview, they called and said they were in traffic yet I could clearly hear a TV and child in the background. Referred to employees as "a**es in seats." Would call employees and scream at them over the phone. Actual screaming, like on a bad reality show. I've never seen that in a professional setting. Lots of politics and backstabbing. Lots of micromanagement, too. They said they wished they could install a time clock. For engineers. 401(k) employee contributions often go missing. I averaged 1 missing contribution per quarter for the first year or two. The 401(k) was later changed to a Safe Harbor 401(k), but nobody ever got the Safe Harbor contribution. (By law all employees should get them, even if they didn't sign up for the 401(k)). Everything is handled by relatives, so everyone's business cards are printed with misspelled names and/or titles in numerous fonts and you can't get them corrected or replaced. Pamphlets and handouts are even worse. 401k was contracted to a someone who didn't know what the words "vested" and "company match" meant. Pockets employees' annual cost of living increases and unspent per diem money from trips. Yes, business worth millions pockets your lunch money. When I asked for a raise, they claimed the company made no profit. When I referred to the COL increase in my secret contract (I saw it when it was left on the printer) they flipped out, then gave it to me. So do your research if you ever want a raise. The only other employee I knew who got a raise got it by quitting and then they begged him to come back. Twice. Zero room for promotion or advancement. 30 day waiting period for meager benefits. So don't have any accidents or emergencies or get sick, mkay. They run the cyber security company from their AOL account via emails in broken English and forwarding hoax chain emails to everyone. Emailed me a form with my name, SSN, address, bank account, all in plain text. At a security company, Confidential documents are occasionally posted on the web and can be found with Google. Much of the work took place in USAF building 179: a noisy, mold-infested building with inadequate parking and bathrooms reminiscent of a porta-potty at Fiesta. (It's the second worst place I've worked after the basement in building 2058.) It's an unclassified building but contractors are banned from bringing in cell phones or other electronics or even media on the threat of instant firing. tl;dr: Watch your back. Document everything in writing, especially verbal promises and email a summary for confirmation. Keep a copy of these emails on a private machine as many of mine were deleted after 12 months.
