Pros

I appreciate my current employer more than ever after my experience at IFG.

Cons

For 30+ years, IFG Companies/Burlington/Guilford has struggled to make a footprint in the E&S marketplace. While I cannot speak for the previous management team that was booted for the current "management team", the leaders of this organization are in fact not leaders at all. They refuse to acknowledge the company's lack of insurance products across all lines and instead place blame on the line underwriters. They lead by fear and threaten the struggling departments with ominous messages of firings if they cannot meet their unreasonable, lofty sales goals (remember - there is NOTHING competitive about their products, so you will fail). It is not surprising that new employees must sign employment contracts that are completely foreign to our industry, making it nearly impossible to accept better employment opportunities at competing insurers. My advice to anyone even remotely considering a position at this "Insurance Company": Just don't.

Pros

Separate sick days and vacation days.

Cons

Health benefits - Expect to pay $1600 a month for what other employers deduct for < $500 You will have a future of career suicide by supporting technologies over 17 years old. Terms will be thrown-around like "agile" and "micro-services" without any real understanding or discipline being used and bandied-around to meet political goals. You will have the pleasure of entering a world of "keep things running" mentality while supporting decades-old software, while any inquiry of improving or re-writing key legacy systems will be responded with the "well, yes. it needs to be re-written . But it's not in the budget. perhaps in the next b budget." (This gets old after 6 or so years.) I cannot stress enough: stay away! IT management is all about perpetuating the lies told to the board of directors, covering up significant problems, and keeping the lights on so management can reap their bonuses. No matter how hard you work, you will never see any reward: this company loves management only, since the people who actually work are forgotten and disregarded.

Pros

Coworkers are friendly and commute is nice.

Cons

Health benefit costs are through the roof (increased 20% on premiums from last year), they only match 50% of 401k. They set growth/production goals 30-40% higher each year, with extremely limited product and appetite. Then when the department doesn't hit those numbers because it's impossible, they don't give out bonuses to the underwriters and fire people regularly. They also make you sign a contract to come on board. Too many managers and not enough UW's because people have finally started to hear how awful this company is to work for. No room for growth either- barely promote within and only managers can have offices.
